Topic: CDC's Act Early Initiatives of the "Learn the Signs. Act Early." campaign - An update

Tracy Mann, 2008 AUCD Fellow at the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will present about her experiences working on the "Learn the Signs. Act Early." health communication campaign. Ms. Mann will highlight her activities related to the health communication strategies used for the campaign, her involvement in the campaign's expansion into Act Early initiatives and the Act Early Summits, and other experiences during her year-long fellowship. Her presentation will include guidance for trainees and professionals with interest in applying for the AUCD fellowship.

The CDC's National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) launched "Learn the Signs. Act Early." in 2004 to increase awareness of parents, health care professionals, and early educators about developmental milestones and the importance of early identification of children with signs of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and developmental disabilities. With the success of the "Learn the Signs" message, "Act Early" initiatives expanded with the collaboration of the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) and the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) to bring the systems of care together to improve the lives of children with ASD and developmental delays.

As a major component of the Act Early Initiatives, CDC convened Act Early Regional Summits in partnership with the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD). The Act Early Regional Summits are a forum to bring together stakeholders to address challenges and opportunities in early identification, diagnosis, and service provision and coordination for children with ASD and their families. Through the Combating Autism Act Initiative (CAAI) of 2006, the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) at the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has joined with NCBDDD to sponsor these activities.
