ONLINE DISCUSSION WITH NIH DIRECTOR ZERHOUNI

Dec 4, 2007- The Chronicle of Higher Education held a one-hour, live discussion with NIH Director Elias Zerhouni, M.D., on the Chronicle's website. People were given a chance to submit questions to Dr. Zerhouni in writing, and the Chronicle will post his answers. Many scientists say the way grants are awarded by the NIH is broken. Peer reviewers, critics say, favor applications from tenured researchers for work that could advance knowledge only slightly, at the expense of bold proposals that could lead to huge strides in medicine and health care. The agency is evaluating proposals for reform.
