AUCD - Poster Symposium: Technology Unleashed: Training in the Digital Age

Session Description
New in 2014, eight AUCD poster symposia seek to deepen levels of engagement and connection between those interested in common topics. Posters have been hand-selected by a review committee and grouped by room according to theme. Facilitators will open each poster symposia with broad thoughts about the room’s theme, and attendees will be allotted ample time for in-depth exploration of the information presented and make connections with others in the room. Attendees are free to select one symposia to attend as space allows; pre-registration is not required.
From iPads to e-Portfolios, distance technology and social media, this symposium will highlight many innovative ways that the AUCD Network is using technology for training and education. This symposium will explore how Network programs are engaging trainees and community members with a variety of technologies.

Throwing out the paper: Using e-Portfolios to document the professional development of LEND trainees.Presenter(s)
Tracy White, MA, BSN, Training Directer/Autism Coordinator, Partnership for People with Disabilities, UCEDD/LENDHistorically, students and professionals have used bulky binders, folders or a combination of the two as a repository for assignments, projects and products they have developed over a period of time. Va-LEND trainees are going digital and are creating electronic portfolios (e-portfolios) to replace the traditional notebook portfolio. The self-reflection enabled by the e-Portfolio demonstrates the power of engagement through an interactive electronic medium.

Taking a Bite out of the Apple: Engagement of LEND trainees using iPads and Technology

LEND trainees were provided an iPad with a toolbox of Apps and asked to use it across all program areas: clinic, didactic and family mentoring experiences. The initial iPad Pilot blossomed into a myriad of opportunities to expand the use of technology in all areas of the LEND curriculum.

Technology can be used to connect and support faculty, trainees, families, individuals with disabilities, and community partners within the LEND training programs. As technology continues to evolve, the opportunities for increased access to LEND activities and resources multiply. The project explored the uses of technology within each of the PacWest programs and to assess pros and cons of an array of technological tools and applications.

Maximizing Technology to Engage LEND Fellows and the Community

PacWest LEND Programs bridge vast landmasses and waterways. These programs developed innovative strategies using technology to increase access for fellows and community professionals in rural areas. This panel session will describe the use of technologies such as video teleconferencing, telehealth, and the Internet to expand the reach of interprofessional offerings and to facilitate dynamic, interactive learning. Positive and negative aspects of different platforms will be discussed.

A process for developing informative videos on developmental screening practices and autism spectrum disorders will be described. A sample of both videos will be shown, and links to material shared.

This poster will provide an opportunity for staff to share elements developed to date, lessons learned, and recommendations for others interested in this topic.

Our project created "howto" video guides in assisting young adults with disabilities in using social networking services. Our guides assist in the identification of social interests, creating forums for local opportunities that align with those interests, linking individuals to resources that support their interests, and providing guidelines for safe relationships.
