Session Description

Transition to becoming independent productive adults is a complicated process for youth in general. Youth and young adults with disabilities and their families face even more difficult and complex challenges. Accessing appropriate primary health care is difficult with few family or internal medicine physicians willing to accept young adults with disabilities as patients. Nineteen years after the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the barriers to employment remain formidable, especially in view of the current economy and unemployment's rates in the United States. For young adults, obtaining postsecondary education has also often been daunting.

This Training Symposium will address proactive, practical approaches to each of these three crucial areas of transition. After a keynote panel of families and young adults describing their transition successes and challenges, participants will have the opportunity to hear from 3 nationally recognized presenters who will share their experiences and effective strategies related to employment, postsecondary education, and health for youth and young adults with disabilities. Time will be available for questions from the participants.

Concurrent sessions by network programs at the AUCD conference will focus on additional strategies to support successful transition in health, employment, and postsecondary education.
