Session Description

Purpose

The purpose of this symposium is to train UCEDD and LEND Training Directors, faculty, and staff how to scale up efforts to promote self-determination using products developed by the National Gateway to Self-Determination (NGSD).  The symposium will be a four-part training focusing on the following areas: 1) An overview of self-determination; 2) an in-depth review of the NGSD website, resources, and products; 3) Strategies to infuse these products into UCEDD and LEND training and program activities; and 4) Technical assistance with scaling up efforts to promote self-determination across multiple adult outcome domains (e.g., employment, community living, health, etc.).

About

Have you struggled with ways to incorporate self-determination into your lectures, trainings?

Do you need to find ways to educate patient, parents, trainees and students about the importance of Self-Determination?

Are you looking for self-determination resources?

The 2012 AUCD Training Symposium will help answer all those questions, and more! The purpose of this symposium is to train a wide range of UCEDD staff and trainees on how to scale up efforts to promote self-determination using products developed by the National Gateway to Self-Determination (NGSD).

The symposium will be a four-part training. It will begin with an overview of self-determination, the importance to people with disabilities, and the social ecological approach to scaling-up efforts to promote self-determination used by the NGSD.

The second portion of the symposium will be an in-depth review of the NGSD website and products. These products include items such the Self-Determination Resource Guide, Issues of Research to Practice in Self-Determination, SD Practice Guides, UCEDD SD Self-Assessment Checklist, and articles on scaling-up efforts to promote SD, among others.

The majority of the time during the symposium will be spent on the third section, which will present participants with three topics (i.e., health, self-advocacy, and employment) and demonstrate how UCEDD and LEND staff can use the NGSD resources to promote these outcomes through efforts to promote self-determination.

Finally, we will provide technical assistance to participants as they explore how to incorporate efforts to promote self-determination into their activities. Each participant will leave the symposium with hard copies and/or digital copies of all NGSD products and with a specific plan of how to infuse these products in their own efforts to promote self-determination.
