Session Description

The AUCD media room is a place for AUCD members, filmmakers, and other artisans to share their creative efforts with conference attendees. As the ways we communicate our research, teaching, and service evolve, the use of multiple forms of media become increasingly important. Film and video are powerful mechanisms for conveying experiences.

The AUCD media room presents films that represent the many challenges and successes of individuals with disabilities, siblings, family members, parents, and advocates. We encourage you to take the time to view some of these offerings: in combination with the research, education, and services offered by AUCD Network members, these films are another tool to highlight, celebrate, and use to create awareness of the issues faced by people with disabilities and their families.

All films shown in the Media Room are eligible to win the AUCD Media Award. This Award is given annually to the film, video, or documentary that is voted by conference attendees as "Best of the Year." Voting will take place at a table outside of the media room entrance; all ballots must be submitted by 4pm on Tuesday, December 4. The AUCD Media Award will be presented at the Wednesday morning Network Meeting and Prize Drawing (the awardee does not need to be present to win).

Departing Rosewood Length: 27 minutes Producer: Maryland DD Council Rosewood, Maryland's oldest and largest institution for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, closed in 2009 after over 120 years of operation. Departing Rosewood, a short documentary, follows one man's journey from Rosewood to his own home in Washington County. This poignant story captures the challenges, hopes and transformations that occur as Steven departs Rosewood and creates a life in the community with new opportunities and new experiences.
Diversity in EL/EC Special Education - Four Videos Length: 106 minutes Producer: Brookes Publishing Filled with insightful interviews and how-to suggestions based on recommended practices, this four-video library will help improve the cross-cultural competence of early interventionists and special educators. Four essential videos and 15 printable forms, activities, and discussion questions build foundational knowledge needed for planning high-quality responsive services.
Embraceable - a Film about Williams Syndrome Length: 52 minutes Producer: Jon Kent - Kent Creative Presenter: Jon Kent You think you know the meaning of kindness, charisma, musical passion and joy until you meet Ben Monkaba and others like him with a rare genetic condition called Williams Syndrome. Despite medical hardships and intellectual challenges, people with Williams embrace life, and everyone around them, with unconditional love and acceptance. Embraceable celebrates this beautiful variation of life through candid interviews, unforgettable social encounters, amazing musical performances, and dramatic portrait photography. Running commentaries by top scientific experts bring to light how this rare genetic abnormality can teach us a great deal about ourselves.
Families with Autism: Let them Stand Tall Length: 45 minutes Producer: Robert Johnson, Center on Disabilities Studies (Hawaii UCEDD) Presenter: Robert Johnson A video celebration of the experiences of four families whose children have autism spectrum disorders. The video showcases teachers, providers, and services that are making a difference in the lives of these families and their children.
One Question Length: 8 minutes Producer: Sprout Films 35 persons with developmental disabilities answer the same one question: If you can change one thing about yourself, what would you change? The production crew for this film included eight people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Roll On Length: 27 minutes Producer: Fanlight Productions Roll On aims to share the everyday lives of families living with neuromuscular disorders with caseworkers and clinicians, and the parents of children who have been recently diagnosed that they are working with. It does this in order to help them gain a new perspective on living with these disabilities.
You're Going to Love This Kid! Length: 55 minutes Producer: Brookes Publishing One of today's most dynamic, respected, and in-demand experts on autism and inclusion, Paula Kluth brings together more than a dozen of her colleagues for this complete professional development package on effective inclusion. Hosted by Paula, this DVD expands on key lessons from her bestselling books ["You're Going to Love This Kid!" Vectors of Autism Length: 50 minutes Producer: Wild Asperagus Productions - Northern Arizona University Presenter: Laura Nagle/Jody Pirtle Vectors of Autism is a new documentary featuring highlights of life on the Autism spectrum. This documentary includes insightful information about adulthood and autism while also highlighting the importance of neurodiversity and the potential of this perspective for supporting appreciation of neurological differences.
Visionary Voices. Leaders. Lessons. Legacy. Length: 15 minutes Producer: Institute on Disabilities (Temple UCEDD) Visionary Voices: Leaders.Lessons.Legacy provides an overview of Pennsylvania's Intellectual Disability Movement. Leaders of the Movement describe their transformation from ordinary citizens to advocates for change. Interviewees include Debbie Robinson, Steve Eidelman, Ginny Thornburgh, Eleanor Elkin, Dennis Haggerty, Nancy Thaler, Pam Abbott, Laurie Scoggins, and Tom Gilhool.
