Incorporating a New Self- Assessment Process on Self-Determination in Plan Development for UCEDDs

Sunday, November 6, 2011 09:00AM - 11:30AM

Location: Potomac Room III/IV

Session Description

Program Description

ADD and AUCD have been active in promoting self-determination so that every individual can set the direction of his or her own life. This symposium/workshop will introduce, review and demonstrate a new UCEDD Self-Determination Self-Assessment Checklist developed by the National Gateway to Self-Determination: National Training Initiative; share lessons learned by other UCEDDs in using this self-assessment process; and provide strategies and resources in using this as a tool to incorporate self-determination in the development of UCEDD 5-year plans.

Abstract

The purpose of The UCEDD Self-Determination Self-Assessment Checklist, developed as a product of the National Gateway to Self-Determination: National Training Initiative, is to provide UCEDDs with a straightforward tool and process to determine the degree to which its policies, practices, and personnel, at a given point in time, are promoting self-determination for people with developmental disabilities and their families. The result will be a profile of the organization's performance that can be used to identify areas for strengthening, and to suggest resources and best practices for desired improvements. This presentation is designed to increase the participant's knowledge and understanding of self-determination; provide an overview of the UCEDD Self-Determination Self-Assessment Checklist; and discuss lessons learn from the experiences of other UCEDDs in using this new tool. Additionally, this presentation will address how information acquired from using this self- assessment process can be strategically applied to the incorporation of  self-determination goals, objectives and activities in future UCEDD five year plans. It is believed that this should result in nationally scaling-up self-determination through training, research and services.

Learning Objectives/Goals

  1. To increase knowledge about how the DD Act defines self-determination activities.
  2. To increase an understanding of how the impact of both the abilities and motivation of the person, and the opportunities presented by the environment, contribute to the degree of self-determination that can be expressed.
  3. To explore, through hands-on review and demonstration, how to use a new National Gateway NTI product, the Self-Determination Self-Assessment Checklist, to help UCEDDs determine the degree to which its policies, practices, and personnel are promoting self-determination for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families in their various programmatic efforts.
  4. To gain knowledge about how the Self-Determination Self-Assessment Checklist/process  is designed as a tool to enable UCEDDs to obtain a profile of the organization's performance that can be used to identify areas for potential strengthening, and information about helpful resources to attain desired improvements in promoting and scaling-up self-determination.
  5. To gain awareness about how the Self-Determination Self-Assessment Checklist/process is organized to correspond directly with the statutory mission and core functions of UCEDDs as well as other aspects of the organization including mission, organizational culture, governance, and human resource policies
  6. To identify strategies and resources for how the Self-Determination Self-Assessment Checklist/process may be used as a tool to incorporating self determination in the development of future UCEDD grant applications.
