Social Media: A Hands-on Coaching Class

Session Description

This workshop will build on the 2010 Social Media: Real Involvement, Real Results workshop. We will organize a Hands On Coaching Class designed to help AUCD network members take theoretical knowledge of Social Media to the next step and begin using it in everyday business.

There are so many ways to connect, including blogging, social networking, and content sharing. Doing it is easier than you think! Participants will master practical, real-world applications and construct their own dashboard for managing multiple social media streams and monitoring multiple conversations. Using these tools you will develop your own unique social media strategy.

Attendees do NOT need to have attended the 2010 Workshop.

Attendees should bring a laptop computer with wireless network and email access.

Detail workshop description:

1. Set up website using Wordpress.com

a. Hosting options

b. Branding:

c. Review WP administrator page layout.

2. Basic activities in WordPress

a. Examples of possible final WP products (blog, website, website + blog)

b. Create/Edit/Posts

c. Create/Edit/Publish webpage

d. Upload image

3. Pre-conference activities: encourage participants to create following accounts prior the class

a. Twitter

b. Facebook

c. YouTube/ Vimeo/ Flick (any video upload)

4. Integration of WordPress with:

a. Twitter

b. Facebook (WP.com Facebook App)

5. Embedded technology

a. Surveys

b. Graphs

c. YouTube, Vimeo, Flickr

6. Newsletter services (constantcontact.com, mailchimp.com)

7. Tracking

a. Google Analytics for .org and hosted solution

b. SiteStats for .com

Jeff Coburn is the Web Services Manager at the Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI) at UMass Boston. Jeff coordinates and builds accessible online services and websites; advocates, writes, and speaks on Universal Design and accessible web development; and serves as a resources for all things technical at ICI. Prior to ICI, Jeff worked in commercial web development for companies in Boston and London, and earned a degree in Journalism from Saint Michael's College in Vermont.
