AUCD - Poster Symposium 6A - Training and Leadership Development

Session Description

All posters for the AUCD Conference will be presented throughout Monday and Tuesday in a series of poster symposia that run at the same time as concurrent sessions. During these 75-minute poster symposia, 10-14 posters on a similar theme will be grouped together in a room. Posters will be displayed on large boards and have a table underneath for accompanying materials. The session will be introduced by a moderator followed by brief introductions by presenters. Attendees will then be free to move around the room and connect with individual presenters for the remainder of the session. Attendees are welcome to move between symposia rooms and view posters on other topics. Conference posters will be available to view on the website and in the mobile app.

Honor Their Experience: A Training for Future Healthcare Professionals on the Importance of Person- and Family-Centered Care

This training was created to guide future healthcare professionals in balancing the application of their discipline-specific knowledge and procedures with the nuanced nature of individualized care. When studying for a specialized discipline, students often focus on the specific ailment(s) that directly pertain to their specialty. This training aims to teach student clinicians to develop a holistic view of their patients, shifting their focus from the "what" to the "who."

LEND Trainees: Where are they now?

The LEND Training Program, funded through the Autism CARES Act, trains future leaders who will be working with and on behalf of individuals with disabilities and their families. This poster will highlight LEND trainees' leadership roles and positions 1 or 2, 5, and 10 years after completing the WIHD-LEND.

The bigger picture: The use of concept mapping with novice clinicians to foster holistic evaluations.

Conducting complex, interdisciplinary evaluations are strenuous educational exercises for student clinicians, or trainees. Trainees primarily focus on building their clinical observation and evaluation skills. Understanding the role of the individual within a team and understanding the temporal role of the evaluation as merely a snapshot in time are both viewpoints that come with experience. The formation of these viewpoints can be catalyzed by utilizing concept mapping as a pedagogical tool.

UCEDD Trainee Leadership Development: A Service Learning Approach to Improving Health Equity for Local Communities in Hawaii

The HI UCEDD Trainee program emphasizes leadership development through service to the community, individuals with disabilities and their families. A Community of Practice to Improve FASD Services in Alaska: Stronger Together

To improve services for children with FASD and their families in Alaska, community and academic partnerships have evolved into an informal community of practice. With a shared focus on systems change, University of Alaska Anchorage, faculty collaborated with content experts on an interdisciplinary FASD course. This presentation will highlight experiences with the course delivery and the opportunities for advancing interdisciplinary FASD education through a community of practice.

Addressing the Case Management Workforce Crisis: Development of an Evident Based Training for Rural Case Managers

Studies since the 1980s outline issues with recruitment, training, compensation, retention, and turnover of case managers. After listening sessions by the Wyoming Department of Health, Home and Community Based Services Division (WDH HCBS), case managers expressed a desire for increased training to provide higher quality plans for individuals with disabilities. The poster outlines the process of developing a case manager training through a collaborative process with Wyoming case managers.

Partnering to Engage Communities and Promote Equitable Early Identification: LEND, Act Early, and Autism Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) network

Promoting equitable access to early identification of autism is a key public health priority. Engaging families and communities in this process promotes equity and reduces disparities. This session highlights strategies for engaging communities around early identification with collaboration across three key projects including LEND (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities), Learn the Signs. Act Early (LTSAE), and Autism Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) network.
