AUCD - Poster Symposium 5B - Diagnostic and Clinical Service Issues and Technology, Assistive Technology and Universal Design

Session Description

All posters for the AUCD Conference will be presented throughout Monday and Tuesday in a series of poster symposia that run at the same time as concurrent sessions. During these 75-minute poster symposia, 10-14 posters on a similar theme will be grouped together in a room. Posters will be displayed on large boards and have a table underneath for accompanying materials. The session will be introduced by a moderator followed by brief introductions by presenters. Attendees will then be free to move around the room and connect with individual presenters for the remainder of the session. Attendees are welcome to move between symposia rooms and view posters on other topics. Conference posters will be available to view on the website and in the mobile app.

Assistive technology to inhibit social isolation in elders and persons with disabilities

Social isolation and loneliness have serious detrimental effects. A project to combat social isolation in persons with disabilities, elders, and their caregivers started with a local ADRC and continued with another ADRC. The means to reduce isolation was assistive technology. Smart connectivity kits were developed to be loaned for technology trials. Hands-on demonstrations of the equipment were also available. Session participants will discover assistive technology to reduce social isolation.

Increasing Capacity to Assess, Select, and Implement Assistive Technology

Service Providers need accessible training and tools to support their capacity to assess, select, and implement assistive technology (AT). The Making Assistive Technology Choices to Help Individuals Accomplish Tasks (MATCH AT) tool provides a module and a toolkit to guide professionals through a step-by-step process for selecting and implementing AT.

Learning from Others' Experiences: Pearls of Wisdom in the Medication Management of Pediatric Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) manifests itself in a variety of symptoms across domains of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity. It is also often comorbid with other mental health or developmental diagnoses. This project created a "pearls of wisdom" flowchart of considerations in choosing medications and other interventions for children with ADHD and other comorbidities based upon shadowing and consultation with a Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrician, whose practice focused on complex ADHD management.

Examining the Demographics of Patients in the Learning, Attention, and Behavior Program, an Interdisciplinary Clinic in Memphis, Tennessee

The Learning, Attention, and Behavior (LAB) clinic provides comprehensive evaluation services utilizing a psychosocial support model for school aged children referred for suspicion of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. The clinic was developed to address disparities that children with disabilities and their families experience with access to health services and supports. As LAB continues to develop, understanding the patient population served and the social determinants which impact their health is critical.

Follow-up in Initiating Recommendations for Newly-Diagnosed Autism Spectrum Disorder

This poster will describe a Quality Improvement project in an interdisciplinary evaluation clinic, which aimed to systematically identify barriers in implementing recommendations following a diagnosis of autism. This study involved interviewing multiple families to identify specific barriers or hardships in initiating recommendations or obtaining resources.


Accessible Materials in a Pediatric Healthcare Setting: Promoting the Health Literacy and Autonomy of Families and Children with Disabilities

Health literacy is an important component of health equity to ensure that families and children can make informed decisions and advocate for their own healthcare. Health literacy is often overlooked in healthcare settings where materials are typically delivered using verbal and written delivery methods. This poster will share approaches to transforming clinical materials in one outpatient pediatric medical setting based on the principles of health literacy and accessibility.

Post-evaluation follow-up visits within a busy resident clinic: Guiding ASD best practices through novel pathways and EHR templates

Primary care providers (PCPs) are often expected to help families navigate next steps after an ASD diagnosis, yet do not receive sufficient training in providing follow-up care. To address this need, we designed an ASD pathway that included streamlined, embedded assessment and routine PCP follow-up within a large resident training clinic. Clinical decision-making templates were embedded within the EHR, to help guide resident PCPs through best practices.

Building Tele-AAC Options in Arizona

This session will describe the difference between training and coaching in augmentative and alternative communication service provision, as well as their associated outcomes. It will outline applicable approaches for tele-AAC coaching and provide examples of how our program used these approaches during service provision for AAC users and caregivers. We will highlight current literature on tele-AAC with application to practice and our plans for future expansion in Arizona.
