AUCD - Poster Symposium 2B - Parent/Family Involvement, Support and Respite and Aging

Session Description
All posters for the AUCD Conference will be presented throughout Monday and Tuesday in a series of poster symposia that run at the same time as concurrent sessions. During these 75-minute poster symposia, 10-14 posters on a similar theme will be grouped together in a room. Posters will be displayed on large boards and have a table underneath for accompanying materials. The session will be introduced by a moderator followed by brief introductions by presenters. Attendees will then be free to move around the room and connect with individual presenters for the remainder of the session. Attendees are welcome to move between symposia rooms and view posters on other topics. Conference posters will be available to view on the website and in the mobile app.

Parents as Experts: Highlighting the Mental, Emotional, and Behavioral Health Needs of Children with Disabilities During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Ketleine Georges, MPH, , The Maine LEND ProgramIn February of 2022, parents of children with disabilities were invited to a virtual conference sponsored by Maine LEND titled "Parents as Experts" and completed an assessment of their family's mental, emotional, and behavioral health needs. This assessment helped to determine awareness of evidence-informed programs that promote health, preserve families, and provide quality care. Additionally, it helped to define which methods help to increase program visibility.

Communicating Developmental Concerns of Children with Prenatal Opioid Exposure Using a Shared-Decision Making Tool: A Pilot

Elsie Bush, MS, , University of Cincinnati UCE, UCEDD/LENDCurrent research on prenatal opioid exposure supports the need for developmental monitoring due to risk for behavioral, speech, and motor delays. This poster discusses the implementation of a shared decision-making tool for caregivers of children with prenatal opioid exposure and early childhood and medical providers. This tool is intended to help identify developmental concerns for children up to 5 years old with prenatal opioid exposure.

Improving Health Outcomes and Quality of Life for Aging Caregivers of Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Nia Anderson, Master of Social Work, LLMSW, Developmental Disabilities Institute, UCEDD/LENDAging caregivers of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) experience poorer health and lower quality of life than their peers. This growing population experiences increased isolation, stress, anxiety and financial challenges which were exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The MI-OCEAN project used a peer model to connect aging caregivers to appropriate services and increase social supports to reduce caregiver stress and improve quality of life.

The Perspectives of Caregivers of Children with ASD In Rural New Mexico on Barriers to Service Access

Nebraska's Working Caregiver Survey - How to Support Working Caregivers

Kim Falk, BSBA, Respite Employer Engagement Coordinator, Munroe-Meyer Institute of Genetics & Rehabilitation, UCEDD/LENDThe UCEDD at the Munroe-Meyer Institute, University of Nebraska Medical Center and the Nebraska Lifespan Respite Network have recruited employers across the state to participate in Nebraska's Working Caregiver Survey for the last two years. We hope to make employers aware of challenges working caregivers experience and supports they may need to remain active and successful in the workforce. Data will be provided on better ways to support working caregivers.

Parent perspectives on a telehealth coaching intervention for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs during the COVID-19 pandemic

Betsy Humphreys, PhD, Research Assistant Professor, INACTIVE-University of New Hampshire, LENDTelehealth rapidly emerged as an essential service delivery approach for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs (CYSHCN) and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic. This mixed-methods study examined parent perspectives about the telehealth approach of a coaching intervention for CYSHCN. This poster presents the qualitative findings from the study, which suggest that telehealth intervention increased access to and participation in services for families of CYSHCN.

OASIS parent training for children with autism scaling up: adoption, implementation, and sustainability

E Zhang, , University of Kansas Medical CenterThe Online and Applied System for Intervention Skills (OASIS) is a manualized web-based parent training program for children with autism. This poster describes the OASIS team's effort in scaling up the OASIS program by training OASIS coaches and coach trainers and providing individualized support based on principles of implementation science. We identify key facilitators and barriers in the OASIS program's adoption, implementation, and sustainability with individual therapists and agencies.

Behave Yourself: Self-Help Behavior Management Resources for Parents

Susan Kastner, Family Support Specialist, Center for Disability Resources, UCEDD/LENDAs the rate of children diagnosed with behavioral disorders has increased, available behavioral support for families in South Carolina has stagnated, and in some areas, decreased. Closures and public health safety measures related to COVID-19 exacerbated an already unbalanced "supply and demand" situation. Caregivers value informal resources while waiting for formal support. Informal guidance introduces terms caregivers should later hear from professionals, enhancing the clinical services when they become available.

This model is designed to support caregivers of autistic children nationally and internationally.

Within this context, new priorities and responsibilities have emerged. The Autism Programs will present several new projects and strategies developed to ensure that all New Mexicans will have access to high quality disability related information.
