Bridging the Gap in Services for Refugees with Disabilities in the US: Understanding the Challenges and OpportunitiesPresenter(s)
Mustafa Rfat, Masters in Social Work/Public Administration , LEND Trainee , Center for Excellence in Disabilities, UCEDD/LENDThis project provides an opportunity for participants to learn about the unique challenges and needs of refugees with disabilities in the United States. The overall goal of this project is to reduce disability disparities and to empower refugees with disabilities to join the rest of society and gain a meaningful life.
Implementing the Goal-Setting Challenge App to Facilitate Goal-Setting and Attainment: Considerations for Usability, Feasibility, and Fidelity

Kaitlyn Millen, PhD, Postdoctoral Researcher , Schiefelbusch Institute for Life Span Studies, UCEDD/LENDThis presentation highlights development of the Goal-Setting Challenge App, which utilizes an evidence-based intervention, the Self-Determined Learning Model of Instruction (SDLMI). Provided are results of single-case studies to further refine the App, assess feasibility and fidelity, and determine initial effects on student outcomes. Participants will gain an understanding of how the App can be used in practice to improve students' in-school and transition outcomes.
Research on Coaching in Inclusive, Secondary Classrooms to Support General and Special Educators

Sheida Raley, Ph.D., Assistant professor, Schiefelbusch Institute for Life Span Studies, UCEDD/LENDCoaching has been identified as an essential support to enhance implementers' abilities to translate knowledge and skills into classroom practice. This presentation will discuss recent findings from a review of existing research of coaching interventions in inclusive, secondary classrooms. Recommendations for practice will be shared based on results of the review of coaching interventions to provide guidance and support transition practitioners in the field.
Self-Determination in Inclusive, Secondary Classrooms: Supports for General and Special Educators

Sheida Raley, Ph.D., Assistant professor, Schiefelbusch Institute for Life Span Studies, UCEDD/LENDThe Self-Determined Learning Model of Instruction (SDLMI) has been identified as an evidence-based practice for enhancing transition outcomes (e.g., competitive employment, community participation) and student self-determination. Recently, the value of the SDLMI in academic content areas has been explored and this presentation will share findings from a large-scale, longitudinal study examining the impact of the SDLMI when implemented in inclusive, secondary classrooms.

The website links to state, federal, and national resources covering the topic areas of transition, education, employment, health care, and community life. The organizations featured on the site include Autism Speaks, the Autism Society of America, the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network, and the Institute for Community Inclusion at UMass Boston.
ME Self-discovery workshop: Leading the way to developing confidence and participation through art, movement, and creative expression

Kennedy Center, UCEDD/LENDThe ME Self-discovery workshop was developed by RFK UCEDD's Occupational and Physical Therapists for individuals with developmental disabilities to promote self-advocacy through inclusion and participation. On Rare Disease Day 2020, children with KDM5C and their siblings built confidence while participating in art, movement, and creative expression and culminated in a presentation for the families. The workshop was designed and adapted to include everyone bringing forth their best abilities.
THRIVE: A life skills course for young adults with ASD

Lisa Kalberg, M.A. Counseling, Education & Outreach Manager, Center for Development & Disability, UCEDD/LENDNew Mexico's UCEDD presents THRIVE?a 12 week Quality of Life course that covered three skill areas key to young adult success: self-determination and self-advocacy, life management skills, and career exploration. This course features direct instruction by two autists with advanced degrees in special education, supported by: licensed counselors, a sibling of an autist, a speech-language pathologist, and guest instruction in finance, nutrition, and career exploration by professors/instructors from UNM.
Diversity in the LEND Advocacy Discipline: Including Self-Advocates with Intellectual Disabilities

Dori Ortman, Family Faculty, LEND Center of Pittsburgh, LENDAs we seek to achieve equity in the disability community, our LEND programs must emulate this priority through recruitment and inclusion of self-advocate trainees with varying types of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities. Strategies must be in place to provide training that addresses self-advocates' specific needs, goals, and interests, while also providing them with effective leadership training alongside clinical peers. This poster presentation will highlight strategies toward this endeavor.
