PATHS Graduate, Daylan Bachik Shares his Transition Experiences on the TEA Website
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) video series captures real-life examples and recommendations for transition planning. In this video, Daylan Bachik shares his story of his successful transition to a career in education. Daylan is a 2023 PATHS graduate, graduating Magna Cum Laude. His chosen track of study was as a Direct Support Professional - Paraprofessional.

Student Spotlight - Blake Jackson
Meet Blake Jackson, a resilient second-year student in the Direct Support Professional - General (DSP-G) track. As a proud member of the PATHS class 2024 in the fightin' Texas Aggie community, Blake is enrolled in the Postsecondary Access and Training in Human Services (PATHS) Program, where he finds inspiration in Andrey Hepburn's timeless words: "Nothing is impossible, the Word itself says "I'm possible'!".

MCDD Hosts Project SEARCH Intern
The Maryland Center for Development Disabilities (MCDD) recently hosted an intern from Project SEARCH at Kennedy Krieger Institute. Project SEARCH at Kennedy Krieger Institute is a 10-month transition program for individuals 18 through 24 years of age that provides hands-on job training through integrated worksite rotations, career exploration, innovative adaptations and mentoring from experienced staff. Its goal is for interns to use their internships skills to gain competitive employment.

Center for Transition to Adult Health Care for Youth with Disabilities Launches New Website
The Center for Transition to Adult Health Care for Youth with Disabilities, a national resource center funded by ACL's Administration on Disabilities (AoD), has launched a new website to help young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) direct their own transition to the adult health care system. The site also includes resources developed by Center partners, including Family Voices, Got Transition, SPAN Parent Advocacy Network, and two AoD-funded University Centers of Excellence in Development Disabilities (UCEDDs): the Institute for Human Development at University of Missouri-Kansas City and the Waisman Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Both of these UCEDDs have done extensive work in the field of health care transitions for youth with I/DD.

UI REACH Virtual Classes
UI REACH, a program for young adults with disabilities at the University of Iowa, is excited to announce two virtual courses that will be offered for the spring 2024 semester. The two courses that will be offered are "Social Skills in the Workplace" and "Healthier You." Classes will be held weekly with an instructor using an online platform. Students will be able to work collaboratively with their peers to achieve the class goals.

JFK Partners' Colorado Office of Employment First Celebrates National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) with Development of Video Minis
October was National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) which commemorates the many contributions of people with disabilities to America's workplaces and economy. This year's theme, "Advancing Access and Equity," recognized the importance of ensuring all people have equal opportunity to contribute their skills and talents to our workforce.

Dan Habib and Samuel Habib Win a National Emmy for My Disability Roadmap
Dan Habib and Samuel Habib of the Westchester Institute for Human Development won a News & Documentary Emmy Award for their short film, My Disability Roadmap. Their New York Times Op-Docs film was honored at the September 27, 2023, ceremony held at the Palladium Times Square Theater in New York City. "My goal for this film is that people won't talk down to people with disabilities.

Making an impact: the Delaware UCEDD's Spectrum Scholars
Spectrum Scholars, a college-to-career program for autistic students that's administered by the University of Delaware's Center for Disabilities Studies, has turned out its first graduates. Andrew Martin graduated in May with a bachelor's degree in Applied Molecular Biology & Biotechnology and in June began work as a biotechnician at SDIX, an immuno-solutions company specializing in large-scale antibody production. Melissa Gatti graduated with a bachelor's degree in Computer Science and is continuing her studies in an accelerated master's program.

You will learn about what IPSE is, how colleges include students with ID, and how to find and apply to college, as well as pay for it.

PATHS Program Welcomes 14 New Students in the Summer Session
The Summer session for the PATHS Program included cooking classes. Students shopped for the ingredients and worked together in the Hullabaloo dorm kitchens to prepare the meals to share. For many students this is their first time away from home, so the students worked hard and had a great time with different art activities focused on improving their self-advocacy skills.

Work-Based Learning with the Center on Disability and Development at Texas A&M University Spotlight
Joshua ISD's work-based learning project recently created balloon centerpieces that were featured at two end of the school year events. They provided decorations for the annual HOSA banquet and the district end of year banquet. Joshua's WBL project creates a variety of balloon center pieces and other balloon party decorations. This project has a special focus on adaptive equipment, so all students are able to contribute.

Transitioning to Adulthood: Employment Supports for Patients with Disabilities
The Colorado Office of Employment First (COEF) and JFK Partners, the University Center of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities at the University of Colorado, is proud to highlight the development and delivery of a training for healthcare providers. This curriculum provides a basic understanding of the importance of employment for youth and adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD), the importance of employment conversations in the healthcare setting, and the evidence based and other employment practices that fully support the employment goals of all people with IDD, regardless of severity of disability.
