AUCD-NCBDDD/CDC "Learn the Signs. Act Early." Funding Opportunities
In response to emerging needs resulting in part from COVID-19, a nationwide Act Early State and Territorial Team initiative focused on building resilience among families with young children served by early childhood state systems is under development. These teams will focus on parent-engaged developmental monitoring, screening, and referral initiatives to ensure that children with developmental delays are identified early and connected with services that can help children and families. A competitive Act Early Ambassador RFA is also available in conjunction with this funding opportunity. This work will be funded through an existing cooperative agreement between AUCD and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD).

NH-ME LEND 2020 Cohort Raises Expectations for All by Meaghan Cullinane
"No one rises to low expectations." New Mexican Congresswoman Deborah Haaland's words motivated leaders and trainees alike during the Hill Visit day at the AUCD conference in Washington DC, "Leading Change Together," this past November. These words were shared with the NH-ME LEND cohort and guided us through a rigorous training year working to improve the health and education of children and youth with neurodevelopmental disabilities by engaging in training related to interdisciplinary, family-centered, culturally competent systems of care.

Funding Opportunity: Children's Mental Health Champions
Deadline: July 24, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. ET
Through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) will support an additional cohort of Children's Mental Health Champions. This funding opportunity is limited to AUCD network members in any state or territory. These Champions will: serve as state/territorial liaisons to the CDC's Children's Mental Health program and positive parenting resources; act as community champion change agents to increase awareness activities and improvement of positive parenting practices; develop and test strategies for building partnerships to promote identification, screening, referral, and intervention; and implement effective strategies for mental health promotion, prevention supports, and creation of networks (e.g., school, healthcare, and community) and better connections between these systems.

New Research Brief: COVID-19 and disability in rural areas
To learn more about COVID-19 impacts on rural people with disabilities, RTC:Rural conducted a survey in late April/early May to explore rural and urban differences in COVID-19 health risks, adherence to public health recommendations, and trust in different information sources. We focused on people with disabilities because they often experience higher rates of secondary health conditions that place them at heightened risk of COVID-19 complications.

New fact sheet: How will the COVID-19 recession impact people with disabilities in rural America?
While many Americans will suffer in the coming recession, people with disabilities in rural areas are especially vulnerable because they are less likely to have an emergency savings fund, have access to paid leave, or be able to work from home. RTC:Rural's recent fact sheet analyzes data from the 2015 and 2016 Survey of Household Economics and Decision-making (SHED) and the American Time Use Survey (ATUS) 2017-18 Leave and Job Flexibilities Module.

Communicating disabilities research in plain language through brand-new Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) podcasts
"The Promise of Discovery" is a new podcast hosted by the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) that highlights research in intellectual and developmental disabilities in plain language, making it accessible to the general public. The podcast launched May 8, with the premiere of the first three episodes.

AUCD Professional Fellows Alum in Kenya Pinpoints 33,000 Individuals with Disabilities for COVID Cash Relief
AUCD Professional Fellows alumni in Africa are leading the push for disability inclusion in their countries' fight against COVID-19. These alumni, who trained at UCEDD and LEND via AUCD's State Department-sponsored exchange programs, are driving inclusive response in new directions. In Kenya, one alumnus is spearheading the country's new initiative to provide emergency cash for food to more than 30,000 people with disabilities.

Food Resources Needed for NH Residents with Disabilities
The latest data brief from the New Hampshire (NH) Disability & Public Health Project shows that in NH, people with disabilities and their families are 4 times more likely to report food insecurity than people without disabilities. Food insecurity results from not being able to afford enough food to live an active, healthy life.

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) researcher Erik Carter, Ph.D., has introduced two new Rehabilitation Research and Training Centers (RRTCs) focusing on supporting youths with disabilities, as well as their parents, as they transition into adulthood and begin to seek employment and adult services.

When Access Goes Viral, Tracking UA Partners' Toolkit for Creating an Accessible Online Course
University of Arkansas - Partners for Inclusive Communities (Partners), Arkansas' UCEDD, has a variety of projects that focus on accessible design. Project staff have created a website called Explore Access: Tools for Promoting Disability Access and Inclusion (exploreaccess.org) which offers several resources and toolkits. Among the target audiences for these resources are those working in higher education settings.
