AUCD sent a letter to Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Ranking Member on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, expressing strong support for the Raise the Wage Act upon its introduction into Congress. The proposed legislation, which will increase the minimum wage to fifteen dollars an hour by 2024, presents a significant step forward for fair employment and will help many Americans with disabilities secure and maintain self-sufficiency.

AUCD is especially pleased with Section 6 of the bill, which phases out subminimum wage certificates for workers with disabilities. These have been frequently abused for years, forcing many people with disabilities to remain in poverty and segregated settings, and the bill’s removal of the certificates over the next six years is an important step forward in the process of making competitive integrated employment available to all people with disabilities.
