AUCD - Poster Symposium: Improving Physical, Mental and Emotional Health and Wellness for People with Disabilities

Session Description

New in 2014, eight AUCD poster symposia seek to deepen levels of engagement and connection between those interested in common topics. Posters have been hand-selected by a review committee and grouped by room according to theme. Facilitators will open each poster symposia with broad thoughts about the room’s theme, and attendees will be allotted ample time for in-depth exploration of the information presented and make connections with others in the room. Attendees are free to select one symposia to attend as space allows; pre-registration is not required.

 

Over 52 million adults living with a disability, yet many health promotion programs do not include people with disabilities in their program design.  This symposium will discuss innovative approaches and strategies to improve the physical, mental and emotional well-being of people with a disability.

The Use of Nutritional Supplementation in Children with Autism in Puerto Rico

The use of nutritional supplements can affect the nutritional adequacy of children diagnosed with autism. This poster will present researching findings from the study Use of nutritional supplements in children with autism attending the Autism Center of Puerto Rico.


Effective Treatment for Alcohol Misuse and Its Negative Behavioral Consequences in Adolescents with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders

This presentation describes the results of a 6-week brief intervention, Project Step Up, designed to reduce alcohol misuse and its negative consequences in adolescents with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). Parents attended separate but concurrent sessions. This manualized treatment, designed specifically for individuals with developmental challenges, was effective in reducing alcohol misuse and its high risk consequences. Teen and parent satisfaction with the treatment was highly positive.

Engaging Childcare Centers in Promoting Healthy Weight among Children with Special Health Care Needs

There is an extensive body of research that demonstrates a higher prevalence of obesity among children with special health care needs versus children without disabilities. The purpose of this project was to conduct a 3-year randomized controlled trial to test the initial efficacy, feasibility and acceptability of an intervention program designed to reduce excessive weight among preschool children with special health care needs.

Cardiovascular Risk and Accelerated Aging among Adult Athletes with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: Examining State-Level Variation

This presentation will describe a research study that examined state-level variation in the relationship between age and cardiovascular risk among adult Special Olympics athletes. Findings indicate that there is significant variability in cardiovascular risk and in the relationship between age and cardiovascular risk by state, suggesting that possibilities exist for improving cardiovascular risk and longevity through advocacy and engagement efforts at the state- and national-level.

Wellness Inclusion Nursing is an outreach nursing program for adults with cognitive disabilities promoting community inclusion, wellness and health equality.

Wellness Inclusion Nursing RNs team with individuals with cognitive disabilities to decrease health disparities. Nurses work together with individuals, families and support teams to connect with community resources thereby enhancing intercommunication. Nurses provide: 1) health education to consumers and their supports 2) education and advocacy with medical professionals to enhance understanding of community living for people with disabilities 3)advocacy and planning for quality end of life in the community.

Teaching Safety Skills to Young Children With Autism: Learning And Sharing Evidence-Based Intervention.

Safety is a critical concern for children challenged by autism. Many children with autism have difficulty identifying threats in the environment, lack sensitivity to pain, and have trouble communicating and/or attending to the concern of others. This presentation will review our clinic's efforts to teach safety skills using individualized, evidence-based safety skills to the children in our care.

Equal Access to Safety: Navigating the Intersection of Disability, Mental Illness and Domestic Violence

This session details the collaboration among a UCEDD, organization serving individuals with mental illness, and a statewide coalition focusing on domestic violence as we sought to improve services for those who are experiencing intimate partner violence. The three-year collaboration explored the intersection of domestic violence, disability and mental illness and tackled issues of respect, accessibility, empowerment and cultural competency, as well as differing perspectives on key definitions and practices.

Using a Family-Centered, Multicomponent Intervention Package to Promote the Food Acceptance of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

This poster examines the efficacy and social validity of a family-centered intervention package designed to increase the acceptance of less preferred foods and/or food groups by young children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The study included four parent-child dyads and targeted behaviors identified collaboratively by the parent and investigators. The intervention package was individualized, family-centered, and that addressed multiple dimensions of mealtimes.

This exploratory study aims to describe the perceived benefits of therapeutic horseback riding for youth with Autism, comparing and contrasting the experience from the youth and parent perspective. Results of this study will allow the EquiCenter, in partnership with Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities, to assess the ways in which Equine Assisted Therapy may be a useful piece of the treatment plan for youth with Autism and other developmental disabilities.

Effects of a Community-based Treadmill Program for Pre-ambulatory Children with Developmental Disability

The achievement of walking is the most frequently stated goal of families of young children with developmental disabilities. Intensive treadmill protocols have been shown to accelerate walking onset in this population, but access to pediatric treadmills is usually limited. A free community-based and family-supportive treadmill walking program was used successfully in children with developmental disabilities under the age of five years.

Effective Collaboration between a UCEDD and a Local Health Department: Assessing BMI Among Children in Special Education in Missoula, Montana

Learn about an effective partnership between a UCEDD and a local health department in Montana. The two organizations worked together to conduct BMI screenings of students with and without disabilities in Missoula County and evaluate the collected data. Through this collaboration the health department and UCEDD were able to learn more about how to conduct BMI screenings and the prevalence of obesity and overweight among children in special education.

It has been well established that children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often have selective eating behaviors which may potentially lead to nutritional deficit, poor cognitive development, learning and behavioral difficulty. This poster presents a snack time intervention approach in which preschools may incorporate play-based, child-centered snack time to improve social engagement and eating behaviors for children with ASD utilizing a multiple baseline design.

This poster is a collaboration between three LEND programs: CA-LEND, NvLEND, and OHSU LEND. Over the past several years, a working partnership has been focusing on feeding interventions for children with neurodevelopmental conditions. Literature reviews, professional surveys, visits, and trainings have been conducted as part of LEND leadership projects. Our special emphasis has been to better understand and support a variety of diverse family systems with complex feeding concerns.

Health is determined by more than access to the health care system. Health is achieved through a combination of genes, environment, lifestyle, and social well-being. The UCEDD at URMC and Special Olympics New York sought partnerships with existing community resources to create opportunities to improve oral health, physical fitness, and healthy behaviors of people with IDD outside of routine health care visits.

Several sites of gynecologic services for Women with Disabilities in Delaware: Transitional Care Practice and Women's' Health Group Special Needs Gyn clinic of Christiana Care and "Practice Without Pressure", a community clinical care site will provide their data regarding gyn-related diagnoses for patients with disabilities across the reproductive age spectrum.
