Session Description

Session Description With the merging of aging and disability at the federal level under the Administration on Community Living and with new guidelines on community living from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services that emphasize person-centered-planning, there is a growing interest in bridging aging and disabilities in policies, practices, and research.

This workshop will highlight community based participatory approaches to understanding the needs of people with developmental disabilities as they age and to developing policies and practices that address these needs. It will be an interactive session with presentations from an expert panel and discussions with participant .

Objectives:

  • Understand how person-centered approaches are applied within an aging system
  • Learn how to use inclusive methods to assess the perspectives of older adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD)
  • Learn how to include adults with IDD in research, training , and self-advocacy 
  • Develop skills in promoting aging and disability collaborations
  • Understand the importance of involving individual with disabilities and their families in developing, implementing, and evaluating managed care initiatives

Schedule:

  • 9:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. : Person-centeredness in aging and disability services (Fox)
  • 9:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.: Lived experience of people aging with IDD (Heumen)
  • 10:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. : Inclusion of adults with IDD in research, training, and self-advocacy (Nelis)
  • 10:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. : Promotion of aging and disability coalitions (Caldwell)
  • 11:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.: Family and individual perspectives on health and long- term services and supports reforms (Heller)
