Assistant Professor of Special Education - Center on Disability and Community Inclusion, The University of Vermont

The University of Vermont (UVM) seeks to hire an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) for a full-time (9-month) appointment to begin August 2018. The UVM College of Education and Social Services seeks to: (a) educate and prepare outstanding professionals in education, social work, and human services; (b) engage in high quality research and scholarship; and (c) provide exemplary professional service within Vermont, nationally, and globally. The primary mission of the College's Special Education Program (housed within the Department of Education), is to prepare undergraduate and graduate students to teach children and youth with the full range of disabilities in a variety of inclusive educational environments. The Special Education Program includes a: (a) robust undergraduate minor, (b) Master's degree with various pathways (e.g., licensure and non-licensure options), and (c) relatively new concentration within the College's doctoral program in Leadership and Policy Studies. The minor primarily serves students preparing to be general education teachers, as well as those from a variety of other fields (e.g., psychology, social work, nursing, communication sciences and disorders, various liberal arts disciplines). A dual-certification option is also available for undergraduate students to become licensed in both general and special education. The K-12, Master's program in special education leads to cross-categorical licensure as a special education teacher. The doctoral program includes both Ed.D. and Ph.D. options. The Special Education Program has a long history of emphasizing inclusive education, collaboration, and evidence-based practices. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teaching, supervising, and advising undergraduate and graduate students in the special education program
  • Engaging in an active program of research that leads to publications and presentations in peer-reviewed scholarly outlets, and seeking external funding for scholarly activities (a wide range of empirical research traditions are respected)
  • Collaborating with other special education faculty to facilitate ongoing program improvement (e.g., program and course development and/or redesign)
  • Collaborating with faculty colleagues in other departments within the College and throughout the University (cross-disciplinary teaching, research and scholarship are encouraged)
  • Engaging in partnerships with colleagues in public schools and related agencies and organizations (community engagement is valued)
  • Engaging in service at various levels (e.g., program, department, College, University, profession)
  • Participating in state and national accreditation initiatives

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusion, diversity, and social justice
  • Earned doctoral degree in Special Education or closely related area (or anticipated degree completion no later than Spring 2018),
  • Ability to teach courses in two or more of the following areas: inclusive educational practices, literacy, numeracy, inclusive applications of applied behavior analysis, collaboration, and/or assessment
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience as a special and/or general education public school teacher in grades K-12
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, contemporary educational and systems practices (e.g., multi-tiered systems of support, universal design for learning, evidence-based interventions, teaching with technology, assistive technology, post-school transition)
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize, design, conduct and publish/present relevant research and scholarship related to special education
  • Successful college/university teaching experience desirable
  • Successful experience supervising undergraduate and/or graduate pre-service teachers/special educators in internship placements desirable
