With a commitment to excellence and diversity, the Department of Education Studies (EDS) at the University of California, San Diego (http://eds.ucsd.edu) is accepting applications for one faculty position at either the Assistant or Associate Professor level in Transforming Special Education, starting July 1, 2017.
The successful candidate will be expected to establish a program of research at UC San Diego that contributes significantly to the national dialogue to transform and improve teaching and learning of students with disabilities from early childhood through adolescence. Among the areas of focus for this position are cultural and social contexts of development among children with disabilities or with a particular disability; family, community, school, and policy factors that shape academic development in children with disabilities; and critical examination of inclusion practices that challenge traditional norms and improve student learning outcomes. Among other areas of research we seek are a focus on transformational teaching practices and teacher development, and how factors such as race, ethnicity, and gender determine not only the diagnosis and school placement of students with disabilities but also their school performance. As we work to transform special education, we are looking for a colleague who understands and challenges long-held deficit paradigms of special education and instead develops student centered, socially mediated teaching and learning that promote social justice for students with disabilities.
For applications at the Assistant Professor level, the candidate's research agenda should address diversity and equity for underrepresented, low-income, or immigrant students. The candidate must also demonstrate expertise in quantitative, qualitative, or mixed research methods. In addition, they should possess an established record of research or evidence of a strong research trajectory.

Additional required qualifications include a doctorate in education or a related discipline (developmental psychology, anthropology, sociology, cognitive science, or human development); experience in preK-12 settings or community organizations; a complex understanding of atypical child and adolescent development; experience in teaching or assisting in teaching at the higher education level; experience and/or participation in grant writing; and experience linking research and practice.
Desirable qualifications include: PreK-12 teaching experience; experience developing or working with dual credential teacher preparation programs; demonstration of leadership in interdisciplinary collaboration focused on issues of inequality and educational access; expertise with educational technologies used in teaching and learning settings.
The Department of Education Studies is an interdisciplinary environment focused on transforming education in diverse contexts, a goal which we believe requires a close integration of research and practice. The department is highly collaborative both in teaching and research and aims to attract new faculty who are interested in working with other faculty in the department, with others on campus, and with practitioners in the community in order to improve education for all students. Current faculty members conduct research on teaching and learning, educational reform and policy spanning P-20, early childhood development, language and literacy, deaf education, educational equity, innovative and appropriate uses of new educational technologies, among other topics, and engage in the training of teachers, education professionals, and educational researchers.
Salary: The level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Salary will be based on University of California pay scales.
