Posted: Thursday, July 14, 2016

Background

Children's Respite Care Center, (CRCC) founded in 1990, is the only facility of its kind in Nebraska providing comprehensive, complex integrated and individualized care to children with special needs aged birth to 21 years, using a unique and proprietary clinical model.

Combining effective professional leadership, a committed staff and the thoughtful support of many volunteers and families, CRCC is a financially sound and progressive organization.   With an annual operating budget of $5 million, and a staff of 150, CRCC currently operates two facilities, offering the Care4 Model, an integrated suite of services proven to result in great benefits to those it serves.

More information about CRCC can be found at:  www.crccomaha.org

Current Circumstances

An accomplished and principled leader will find this healthy and joyful organization ideally positioned for continued growth and innovation.

CRCC was founded by sisters Theresa Fitzgerald and Christine Johnson in 1990.  After the initial founding, Christine stepped away to lead a number of private and nonprofit organizations and initiatives, while Theresa gave her full attention to building CRCC.  Theresa was a classic founder - charismatic, passionate and tenacious.  She willed this organization into being, compelling funders, volunteers, parents and families, and a deeply devoted staff, to create a continuum of care and an innovative culture of continuous improvement.

When Theresa passed away, too young, Christine returned as the interim CEO.  Christine's unique standing and credibility as a co-founder, and her skills as an executive and leader, have made possible an eloquent transition.  Theresa's entrepreneurial style and passion was the engine that drove this organization, but her approach was not replicable.  While retaining Theresa's values and creative spirit, Christine has successfully introduced management and information standards that have moved this organization to an even higher level of performance, and potential.  With full staff involvement and support, a rigorous team-based management structure has been developed, moving maximum authority and accountability to line managers, supported by solid information, with a clear plan and performance metrics.

The Board, which focused on assuring solid fiduciary standards while appropriately deferring to Theresa as an independent-minded, deeply committed founder, is alert to its need to adapt to new leadership and a comprehensive organizational strategy.  The Board is mostly composed of business, philanthropic, legal and financial executives, experienced in corporate and business practices and keen to operate as a strategic partner to a strong, autonomous CEO, and to continue advancing fund raising and community advocacy.

There is a solid strategic plan and a strong leadership in place, but our premise is that the new CEO will lead a full review of the organization, and work with the Board and staff to identify key opportunities for growth, including the expansion of the Board and its mission.  CRCC is already an innovator in this field, but we seek to explore many possible options, to improve performance, add to our programs, create a professional growth track for our employees and possibly to scale up or add new sites.

Omaha is home to many active corporate citizens, community volunteers and philanthropies.  They share a common commitment to support caring and committed organizations, but demand that those organizations be strategic, well governed and maximize resources to benefit those they serve.  CRCC is already in good standing with these supporters, and, with the CEO, is in a position to build on this foundation.
