Coordinator, Services for Students with Disabilities - Student Health and Support - Columbia College Chicago, Chicago, IL

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Services for Students with Disabilities, the Coordinator is primarily responsible for coordinating accommodations for approximately 600 students with disabilities. The Coordinator arranges classroom, testing, and other accommodations for students with disabilities. Work involves considerable diplomacy and mediation, as well as awareness of the need to strike a balance between students' rights and the responsibilities that accompany those rights. Errors may result in continuing conflict, ill will or lawsuits.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist the Assistant Director in determining accommodations based on documentation, ADA law, student input, and Columbia's Requirements.
  • Assist the Assistant Director with meeting with students and providing accommodation letters.
  • Provide assistance to the Assistant Director in reviewing medical, psychological, neurological, and educational documentation.
  • Field calls from students with disabilities and their parents. Answer questions about accommodations and support available, as well as documentation required.
  • Work with students individually and in small groups to help them develop learning strategies appropriate to their learning strengths and challenges.
  • Collaborate with faculty and other campus resources to implement support strategies for students.
  • When appropriate, develop workshops to address student needs.
  • Educate College community regarding Services for Students with Disabilities during various events (i.e., Open House, Registration, and Student and Faculty Orientations; present to visiting groups; and, provide sensitivity training to the College community).
  • Coordinate scheduling and accommodations for testing, note-takers, and books on tape.
  • Supervise, train, and approve time for Office Manager.
  • Develop working relationships with external agencies for the .enhancement of Services for Students with Disabilities.
  • Serve on Student Affairs committee as required/and needed.
  • Supervise, recruit, train and approve time for student assistants.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prefer candidates with experience conducting or evaluating psychoeducational evaluations and other documentation regarding student needs and functioning, such as assessments of academic achievement, cognitive functioning, attention, emotional functioning and autism spectrum characteristics.
  • Prefer nationally certified school psychologist and a member of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and Illinois School Psychologist Association (ISPA).
  • Experience reading and interpreting disability related documentation for students and experience working with adolescents and/or adults with disabilities.
  • Master's Degree in a disability, education, or psychology - related field.
  • At least 2 of years' experience working with students with disabilities required or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of Section 504 and ADA essential.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities.
  • Good interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and organize support groups and informational sessions and workshops.
