Northern Arizona University seeks a dynamic, visionary leader for the Institute for Human Development. IHD is a Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities serving Arizona and Native American tribal communities. The Executive Director provides leadership for an interdisciplinary enterprise that provides disability and human development services, research, education and technical training in pursuit of full inclusion of and opportunity for persons with disabilities.
The Institute is situated in the college of Social and Behavioral Sciences on the Northern Arizona University Flagstaff campus. Most of IHD's personnel are located on the Flagstaff campus of NAU but IHD operates the Arizona's Assistive Technology Act grant program out a Phoenix location and some of IHD's research is conducted through a subcontract with the University Of Arizona's College Of Medicine in Tucson. The IHD recently established the American Indian Vocational Rehabilitation Training and Assistance Center with funding from the US Department of Education. Over the course of its 48-year history IHD has averaged about five million dollars a year in external funding. Since 1990, IHD has been an interdisciplinary University Center for Excellence in Education, Research and Service in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD). The Executive Director will develop and implement a strategic agenda for IHD that expands services, research, training and educational endeavors through university and external partnerships. The successful candidate will have strong capacities for organizational and resource development. IHD personnel value engaged, compassionate leadership that fosters synergistic integration and collaborations among a diverse array of projects. The Executive Director is expected to provide leadership for growth of research and academic programs with partners across the university, as well as entrepreneurial endeavors with private sector and community partners.
The Executive Director should have a minimum of 10 years experience in the disability field, including being a principal investigator for federal or state grants. Applicants should have a doctoral degree in a disability related academic or professional field as well as extensive experience in organizational leadership and sponsored research, service or training project management. The successful applicant will be qualified for a faculty appointment in the appropriate academic unit at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, or Professor of Practice.
Qualified applicants will have knowledge of disability legislation, policy, practice and research, a record of successful grant writing and management, and scholarly or professional accomplishments commensurate with a leadership and faculty appointment. Strong communication, financial management, and human relations capacities are required, as is demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion. Experience in multi-cultural communities, philanthropic fundraising, and work in a UCEDD are desirable qualifications.
Northern Arizona University has a student population of about 28,000 at its main campus in Flagstaff and at 26 sites across the state. Located at the base of the majestic San Francisco Peaks, Flagstaff is 140 miles north of Phoenix at the intersection of Interstate 17 and Interstate 40. With its elevation of 7,000 feet and four-season climate, Flagstaff is ideal for year-round outdoor activities. Nearby attractions include the Grand Canyon, Lowell Observatory, Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Monument Valley, Sunset Crater, Meteor Crater, and Arizona Snowbowl ski resort.
