Overview:

The Boggs Center is New Jersey's federally designated University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities and is part of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Department of Pediatrics. Since its inception in 1983, The Center has emphasized a community based, lifespan approach to meeting the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.

The Boggs Center provides community and student training and technical assistance, conducts research, and disseminates information and educational materials. Activities of The Boggs Center are guided by our Consumer Advisory Council and partnerships with people with disabilities, families, state and community agencies, and policy makers.

The faculty member will teach, conduct community training and technical assistance, and participate in scholarship in transition from school to adult life for transition-age students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, with a focus on community-based instruction. The position is primarily funded through a contract with the NJ Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs.

Required Qualifications:

  1. A doctorate or equivalent terminal degree in Special Education, School Psychology, Social Work, Public Policy, or a related field.
  2. Knowledge of best practices and philosophical tenants for school to adult life transition including inclusion, positive behavior support, self-determination and person centered practices.
  3. Knowledge of IDEA and other federal requirements for developing and implementing individual education plans for transition-age students with disabilities.
  4. Demonstrated expertise in professional development activities (e.g., training and technical assistance) on transition practices, community-based instruction, and other inclusive educational strategies for transition-age students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including students with severe disabilities.
  5. Demonstrated ability to provide leadership to continuing education and technical assistance activities, including coordination with State agencies, evaluation of service implementation, and development of accessible educational materials on transition from school to adult life.
  6. Demonstrated ability to acquire external funding.
  7. Demonstrated ability for research and scholarship in transition from school to adult life and/or effective methods of educating future and current professionals about best practices in transition.
  8. Ability to manage project teams.
  9. Ability to represent the Center within Rutgers and other institutions of higher education and to work collaboratively with representatives from a diverse range of groups, including state and federal agencies, advocacy organizations, schools, employers, and disability service providers.
  10. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience in developing transition programs for 14-21 year-old students with intellectual disabilities to enhance post-secondary education, employment, and independent living outcomes for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  2. Demonstrated experience in high school settings or service program administration in intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  3. Experience in graduate-level teaching and in mentoring graduate and undergraduate students
  4. Experience in university-community partnerships.
