Teacher of Students with Visual Impairment Program

Texas Tech University seeks an Assistant Professor of Special Education who will serve as Coordinator of the Teacher of Students with Deafblindness Program and serve in the Teacher of Students with Visual Impairment Program for an academic year tenure-track position starting in August, 2016. The Teacher of Students with Deafblindness/Visual Impairment Programs are seeking a qualified individual to join a productive faculty that includes educators and researchers who are engaged scholars in EC-12 schools.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will have:

  • a completed doctorate in Special Education with an emphasis in education of students with deafblindness, visual impairments, or a related field;
  • EC-12 teaching experience of students with deafblindness and/or visual impairments;
  • demonstrated potential or ability to conduct research in education of students with deafblindness /visual impairments that results in positive student outcomes;
  • demonstrated potential or ability to obtain external funding; and
  • a commitment to serving diverse populations.

Additional qualifications that will strengthen the application include:

  • experience teaching courses in a Teacher of Students with Deafblindness Program and/or Teacher of Students with Visual Impairment;
  • possession of teaching credentials (e.g., certified teacher of students with visual impairments, certified orientation and mobility specialist);
  • college level teaching experience;
  • grant writing and/or management experience;
  • graduate online and/or face-to-face teaching experience; and
  • technology skills for distance education.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will:

  1. Coordinate the Teacher of Students with Deafblindness Program;
  2. Teach graduate courses in the Teacher of Students with Deafblindness Program or Teacher of Students with Visual Impairment Program using distance education;
  3. Conduct research that meaningfully contributes to the field and practice;
  4. Supervise student research and practice in a manner that promotes their scholarly potential;
  5. Advise certification, masters and doctoral students and serve on doctoral committees;
  6. Apply for external funding to support research and practice;
  7. Contribute to the advancement of specialization and program goals through service;
  8. Partner with schools and/or agencies to ensure meaningful research, teaching, and practice;
  9. Engage in service duties including program-building and service to the Department, College, and University.

The College of Education at Texas Tech University is comprised of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, the Department of Teacher Education, the Department of Educational Psychology and Leadership. The College of Education houses 11 graduate programs between the two departments that prepare both applied and basic researchers who possess the skills to work with diverse populations.
