Executive Director - Chapters Ahead, Inc., Powell, OH

Posted: Tuesday, March 31, 2015

Chapters Ahead, Inc., a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization, is seeking a dynamic, full-time Executive Director to manage and grow a number of nationally-recognized literacy, community inclusion and social programs for adolescents and adults with developmental disabilities (DD).

Organization background: We established Chapters Ahead in 2011 to serve as an over-arching training and technical assistance provider for the Next Chapter Book Club (NCBC), Jot It Down (JID), and related programs.  Previously, these programs had been under the auspices of The Ohio State University Nisonger Center where they were originally developed.  The non-profit organization allows us to pursue a cost-effective business model for managing and expanding the programs.

In 2002, Dr. Tom Fish and his colleagues founded NCBC, a community-based literacy program for people with DD.  NCBC is now the largest program of its kind, serving over 1,500 people weekly in over 250 book clubs across 5 countries. Individual clubs consist of five to eight people with DD and two volunteer facilitators who are trained to engage members with a wide range of abilities. Each club meets weekly for an hour in a community setting such as a bookstore or coffee shop to read aloud and discuss a book of their choosing. JID, which grew out of our experience developing and disseminating NCBC, is a weekly, one-hour writing club that gives people with DD supported opportunities to think creatively and express themselves. See www.nextchapterbookclub.org

Position responsibilities include:

  • Set a vision and long-range plan for NCBC and JID
  • Provide training and technical assistance for NCBC and JID affiliates
  • Conduct professional conference presentations
  • Market the full array of Chapters Ahead programs and products
  • Cultivate relationships with corporate and public partners
  • Develop and implement strategies for organizational sustainability (i.e. identify sources of long-term financial support)
  • Manage day-to-day operations (i.e. budget management)
  • Coordinate Board meetings and further develop Board membership
  • Advocate on matters of interest to the organization
  • Manage website and social media activities

 The ideal candidate will have:

  • An entrepreneurial spirit
  • An engaging and outgoing personality
  • The ability to problem-solve and think creatively
  • Excellent marketing and social media skills
  • Experience with program expansion and development
  • Good leadership and organizational skills

Salary and office location are negotiable.  Applicants should send a letter of interest and resumé to:
