    The Center on Disability Studies (CDS) is a University Center in Excellence in Developmental Disability (UCEDD). The CDS mission is "to promote diverse abilities across the lifespan through interdisciplinary training, research, and service." Our current founding director, Robert Stodden, will be retiring at the end of 2014. We are currently recruiting for this position to direct a creative, energetic, entrepreneurial.   • General or Special funds, contingent upon position clearance and departmental needs. Appointment to begin approximately August 2014. Selectee is required to complete the COE New Faculty orientation and the first year and pass a criminal background check.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Lead a University Center of Excellence in Developmental Disability Education, Research and Service (one of 67 such centers in the nation) that receives funding from the Administration on Developmental Disabilities.
  2. Teach undergraduate and graduate special education or related courses; develop, teach, and advise students off-campus, on-line and using other various distance delivery technologies.
  3. Administer and manage a diverse, interdisciplinary faculty and staff of a large and productive research unit.
  4. Provide leadership within and across education, health, and habilitation disability communities to address issues impacting the quality of life of persons with disabilities.
  5. Develop concepts and write successful proposals for extramural research/training funds.
  6. Lead interdisciplinary grant and project development teams.
  7. Successfully leverage core state and federal funding.
  8. Partner successfully with other UH units and with state, federal, and private funding agencies to achieve unit goals.
  9. Mentor graduate students and faculty through extramurally funded project activities.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Earned doctorate in education, health, or human service field related to persons with disabilities.
  2. Extensive experience and knowledge of the field of disabilities.
  3. Five or more years of administrative experience within a large research and training center.
  4. Experience leading and conducting interdisciplinary research and training activities.
  5. Extensive personal experience writing and securing competitive grants and managing extramural research and training funds.
  6. Demonstrated leadership, teaming, and interpersonal communication skills.
  7. Demonstrated experience leading faculty in the successful development of extramural grants.
  8. Record of scholarship and publication commensurate with the rank of Professor.
  9. Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience that provides the required education, knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated.

Desirable Qualifications

  1. National and international recognition as a leader in one or more of the involved disciplines.
  2. Extensive experience working in multicultural settings.
  3. Successful experience in obtaining international grants and contracts.
  4. Understanding and commitment to disability and diversity.
  5. Experience working with Native Hawaiian and Pacific Island communities.
