GAO Report - Voters with Disabilities: Observations on Polling Place Accessibility and Related Federal Guidance

GAO examined a nongeneralizable sample of 178 polling places during early in-person voting and on Election Day 2016. At these polling places, GAO examined a number of features outside and inside the voting area. Outside the voting area, GAO was able to examine features at all 178 polling places and found that 60 percent (107) had one or more potential impediments. The most common were steep ramps located outside buildings, lack of signs indicating accessible paths, and poor parking or path surfaces.

IHD 50 years of Service (AZ UCEDD)
After five decades of service to the state of Arizona, the Institute for Human Development is celebrating its 50th Anniversary. Throughout its history, the Institute has emphasized services, research and training. These focus areas continue today as the Institute celebrates its past and focuses toward the future to provide positive changes in the public's perception of persons with disabilities. We hope that through our efforts there will be greater changes in access, attitude, and inclusion for persons with disabilities.

Position Opening: Assistant Virtual Trainee
The Assistant Virtual Trainee (AVT) is a trainee who has a strong desire to learn more about project management and the importance of engaging others to advance the mission of a national nonprofit and its broader network. The position spans one Spring semester and is paid a $500 stipend as well as appropriate travel costs associated with attending the 2018 Disability Policy Seminar in Washington, D.C.

Submissions Requested - Inclusive Approaches to Health for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities
Due November 20th
Special Olympics International (SOI), in collaboration with the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) and the American Association on Health and Disability (AAHD), is working to support national level organizations to adopt and promote inclusive approaches to health for persons with intellectual disabilities (ID) with an eye to creating the tipping point for a health system that is inclusive of all people, including people with ID.

Nearly 900 people from around the country joined us at the 2017 AUCD Conference in Washington, DC, as we realized the power of our collective voices working to sustain vital supports and services for people with disabilities and their families cannot be denied. Over the course of four days, speakers discussed the strategies, innovations, and systems that will allow us to continue to move the needle forward. AUCD recorded the three plenary sessions of the conference for you to continue to watch and learn, so that all may hear the critical importance that communication and advocacy, both collective and personal, have in our public lives.

American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Children with Disabilities - A Resource You Should Know About!
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Council on Children with Disabilities (COCWD) is comprised of over 600 diverse physician members (eg, neurodevelopmental pediatricians, developmental and behavioral pediatricians, geneticists, neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, physical medical and rehabilitation pediatricians, and general pediatricians) who care for or have an interest in children and youth with disabilities, including those with complex needs.

Family Engagement Quality Improvement: A "How-To" Implementation Toolkit
The National Center for Medical Home Implementation conducted a nation-wide family engagement quality improvement project to enhance family engagement in the pediatric medical home. As a result of this project, a Web-based toolkit was developed; it provides tools and resources needed for implementing family engagement quality improvement projects in clinical practice or through multi-site learning collaboratives.

FCIC (FL UCEDD) Receives National Center Award from OSERS
Florida Center for Inclusive Communities at the University of South has received $5.5 million from the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services, Department of Education to establish a national technical assistance center focused on positive social, emotional, and behavioral outcomes for young children with, and at risk for, disabilities. The National Center for Pyramid Model Innovations will assist states, early childhood programs, and professionals in their implementation of a promotion, prevention, and intervention model to improve young children's social emotional competence and reduce challenging behavior.

Latino Community of Practice at Georgia State University
The consortium co-leads bilingual community education and engagement for and with Spanish-speaking and limited English-proficient families, in a partnership with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Learn The Signs Act Early (LTSAE) campaign. And provides technical assistance to co-founding and core consortium partners on how to best serve, including the use of our Community Health Workers/Promotoras de la Salud model, the ever-growing Latino population of Georgia.

Mississippi Institute for Disability Studies - Home of Your Own housing program celebrating 20th Year Anniversary (MS UCEDD)

2017 is a milestone year as the Institute for Disability Studies (IDS)' Mississippi Home of Your Own (HOYO) program celebrates its 20th year anniversary. The quote from John Lewis "If not us, then who? If not now, then when?" stood out to me several years back when I came to work for IDS, hoping to make a difference in our state for this underserved population.

Pavithran (UT UCEDD) Named to United States Commission on Civil Rights Utah Advisory Committee
Sachin Dev Pavithran, Utah Assistive Technology Program director and Center for Persons with Disabilities at Utah State University policy expert was recently appointed to the United States Commission on Civil Rights Utah Advisory Committee. The Committee is composed of citizen volunteers familiar with local and state civil rights issues. The members assist the Commission with its fact-finding, investigative, and information dissemination functions. Pavithran received bachelor's degrees in business information systems and marketing, a master's degree in vocational rehabilitation counseling, and recently completed his Ph.D. disability disciplines from USU.

Self-Determination Inventory System (SDIS) Data Dashboard (KA UCEDD)
The Self-Determination Student Inventory System (SDIS) is comprised of two new validated measures created by researchers Karrie A. Shogren and Michael L. Wehmeyer at the University of Kansas: the Self-Determination Inventory: Student Report (SDI:SR) and the Self-Determination Inventory: Parent/Teacher Report (SDI:PTR). The SDI:SR asks students questions about how they feel about their ability to be self-determined; that is to make choices, set and go after goals, and make decisions. The SDI:PTR measures a teacher's or parent/family member's perception of a young person's self-determination.

The Boling Center for Developmental Disabilities (TN UCEDD) Welcomes Its First Child Neurologist
Dr. Gipson is a child neurologist and neurodevelopmental disabilities specialist. She completed her LEND training/residency in child neurology/neurodevelopmental disabilities at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Kennedy Krieger Institute. After joining the faculty there, she founded the first TSC Center of Excellence at Kennedy Krieger Institute and established an interdisciplinary model of care for children and adults with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex-associated neuropsychiatric disorders.

Va-LEND Welcomes New Co-Training Directors
Jacqueline Robinson Brock and Meera R. Mehtaji have joined Va-LEND as the new Training Co-Directors for the program. They will be bringing their complementary skills into the Training Director position which they will share. Va-LEND is in the process of implementing its revised curriculum that incorporates increased universal design and student engaged learning with a more diverse group of trainees.
