LEND Trainees Attend 2014 Disability Policy Seminar

As a current LEND trainee in the field of public health, I was impressed with the collaboration between the multiple sponsor organizations. It is rare to see so many groups with differing missions come together to work towards a common goal and bring a united front when working on key policy issues.

Senator Harkin Introduces 'Six By '15 Campaign'

During an evening reception at the Disability Policy Seminar, Senator Harkin officially announced the start of the "6 By '15" campaign - an national effort to work on six national goals by the end of 2015, the year that marks the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and 40th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

A workbook-style document for individuals with disabilities as they think about what they need for a successful transition

Geared for individuals with disabilities, this paper was produced by members of the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) because they want to help people work together to support the self-determined transition of youth to adulthood and community life.

DSM-5 Resources

The Fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) was released in May 2013, bringing with it several revisions to the criteria for the diagnosis and classification of mental disorders. One important change was for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) classifications. AUCD's resource page on the DSM-5 and ASD includes select resources that network members have found to be helpful in understanding the changes to the criteria.

AUCD Celebrates April as Autism Awareness Month

On December 18, 2007, the UN General Assembly designated April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day, which was first observed in 2008. This UN resolution is one of only three official disease-specific United Nations Days that brings world attention to autism spectrum disorder, a developmental disorder that affects as many as 1 in 68 children, according to new estimates from the CDC.

Former network trainee now an integral leader of national disability initiatives

Aaron has almost 20 years of experience working with and for individuals with disabilities in both the direct practice and public policy sectors. AIDD provides financial and leadership support to organizations in every state and territory in the United States to ensure that individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families can fully participate in and contribute to all aspects of community life.

AUCD Supports President's State of the Union Agenda of Equality and Opportunity for All Americans

AUCD strongly supports the agenda of equality and opportunity that the President laid out in the State of the Union address last night. While the President did not mention people with disabilities specifically, his agenda includes policies that the disability community has long championed and we believe that when he says everyone he means everyone.
