Dr. Matthew Wappett Named New Director at CPD (UT UCEDD)
The Center for Persons with Disabilities at Utah State University welcomes Dr. Mathew Wappett as their new director on January 25. Wappett, an Alaskan native, received his doctorate in special education from the University of Utah. He began his career in education as a high school English teacher before climbing the collegiate ladder. Wappett's background in disability includes a stint as an associate director of the Center on Disabilities and Human Development at the University of Idaho.

AUCD Expresses Serious Concerns Over Confirmation Hearing of Betsy DeVos
The HELP Committee is urged to postpone her confirmation vote pending additional information
The Association of University Centers on Disabilities expresses serious concerns with a number of the responses that Betsy DeVos provided at her confirmation hearing earlier this week, and to urges the Senate HELP Committeeto postpone any votes on her confirmation until Mrs. DeVos has clarified her support for the federal role in ensuring that every child with a disability receive a free, appropriate public education consistent with federal law.

Dr. Frederick B. Palmer Retired from Boling Center for Developmental Disabilities Universities of Tennessee Health Science Center
Dr. Palmer retired from the Boling Center for Developmental Disabilities, University of Tennessee Health Science Center on January 6, 2017 after 23 years as Director and Shainberg Professor of Pediatrics. The Boling Center is a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) and a Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and related Disabilities (LEND) program. The center is administratively housed and supported in part through the Department of Pediatrics.

CT LEND has had an Exciting New Start this Year
The CT LEND has had an exciting new start this year. Nine UCONN graduate students from various disciplines, two Yale Developmental-Behavioral Pediatric fellows, four community trainees, and four Human Services/Family Studies students from Goodwin College fill our conference room at UCONN Health each Friday. We welcome family faculty and several UCEDD staff members to each weekly seminar as well.

MNLEND Nov 2016 Forum Video Released
MNLEND invites the AUCD Network to view a 3-part video of the MNLEND November 2016 Forum: "Litigation: Advancing the Rights of People with Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities," which features U.S. district court judge, The Honorable Donovan W. Frank, and a panel of legal experts. Over 100 people attended this event on November 17, 2016.

IHD-AzUCD Welcomes Dr. Kelly Roberts as New Executive Director
Dr. Kelly Roberts has worked in the disability, education, and health and human service fields for over 29 years. During this time she worked as a teacher in grades 6 through 12, researcher, AT specialist, postsecondary education instructor, and administrator. She has extensive experience working with individuals from multicultural and linguistically diverse backgrounds as well as with individuals with a broad range of disabilities.

Developing Social-Emotional and Behavioral Supports for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students (TX UCEDD)
The Behavior Support Collaborative lead by Dr. Mack D. Burke in conjunction with the Center on Disability and Development in the Department of Educational Psychology at Texas A&M University was awarded a catapult grant from the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD). The purpose of the catapult grant (Improving Quality of Life Through a Culturally Responsive Lens: Developing Social-Emotional and Behavioral Supports for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students At-Risk for Emotional and Behavioral Disorders) is to improve the quality of life and well-being of students from culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) backgrounds who are at-risk of developing emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) by promoting school adjustment.

Four UCEDDs (TN, TX, MN, KY) Collaborate to Put Faith and Jobseekers with Disabilities to Work
A new manual outlines how faith communities can support members with disabilities in finding and maintaining employment. The manual was spearheaded by the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (TN UCEDD) and its partners at the Human Development Institute (KY UCEDD), the Texas Center for Disability Studies (TX UCEDD), and the Institute on Community Integration (MN UCEDD). All four UCEDDs facilitated the two-year Putting Faith to Work project as an activity of the National Collaborative on Faith and Disability.
