Congress Passes ABLE Act

Bill Promotes Economic Self-Sufficiency for People with Disabilities

"The bipartisan votes for the ABLE Act, coupled with similar votes for the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, are a good reminder that Republicans and Democrats in Congress want to see improvements in policy and practice that will result in more Americans realizing the vision of the Americans with Disabilities Act and become full participants in the lives of their communities," said Andrew J. Division of Human Development and Disability's New Director, Dr. Georgina Peacock

Georgina Peacock, MD, MPH, FAAP has been appointed as the Director of the Division of Human Development and Disability. Dr. Peacock has served as the Acting Director for the past four months, but she assumed the role permanently on Monday, December 15, 2014.

The State Innovation Models (SIMS) Program: An Overview

BBC Article: Care for people with learning disabilities 'failing', report says

Article in the BBC News UK reporting on a major government report with recommendations on the status of people with intellectual disabilities (or "learning disabilities" as they use the term) in the UK. The report - Winterbourne View - Time for Change - offers 10 recommendations for the NHS, local government, regulators and the government.

Letter to CMS Providing Comments on Speech Generating Devices

On December 5, 2014, AUCD provided Laurence Wilson, the Director of the Chronic Care Policy Group of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in the United States Department of Health and Human Services comment on Speech Generating Devices. AUCD's special interest group on assistive technology worked in coalition with other researchers, health professionals, service providers, and individuals with disabilities and their families to provide the following comments with respect to the National Coverage Decision (NCD).

The Uninsured: A Primer - Key Facts About Health Insurance and the Uninsured in America

The first presents basic information about health coverage and the uninsured population leading up to and after the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, who the uninsured are and why they do not have health coverage. The second presents information on the impact lack of insurance can have on health outcomes and personal finances, and provides an understanding of the difference health insurance makes in people�s lives.
