Rose F Kennedy UCEDD at Montefiore Partners with Bronx Developmental Disabilities Council for 13 Annual Health Services Conference

The Rose F Kennedy UCEDD (NY) at Montefiore partnered with the Bronx Developmental Disabilities Council for its 13th Annual Health Services Conference on November 18, 2016, entitled Physical and Behavioral Health Care for Persons with Developmental Disabilities. For years the RFK UCEDD has worked collaboratively with the Council, an association of parents, advocates and professionals that is advisory to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities.

AUCD joined the National Disability Rights Network (NDRN) and the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD) on an amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court case Endrew F v. Douglas County School District.

Increasing Folic Acid Intake through Public Health Education (WI- Waisman Center UCEDD/LEND)

Folic acid is a crucial B vitamin that can prevent up to two thirds of cases of neural tube defects if taken daily before a woman becomes pregnant. Over the past year, faculty, staff and trainees at the Waisman Center UCEDD and the WI LEND program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, have been working to increase awareness of the significant public health impacts of daily folic acid use. The current "Folic Strong" Initiative is a 3-pronged public health approach based on 1) policy changes that improve access to prenatal vitamins containing folic acid for all women of reproductive age, 2) healthcare provider education and 3) direct-to-consumer education to increase the number of women in Wisconsin who are taking vitamin supplements with folic acid.

Iowa's UCEDD Training Behavior Teams Improve Outcomes for Students Engaging in Challenging Behaviors

The CDD training teams have worked with 19 school-based behavioral teams, varying in size from one to nine members, to teach them how to design, conduct, and analyze results of different behavioral assessments (e.g., preference assessments, functional analysis). Ten of the 19 teams have graduated from training and are now training other personnel in conducting these assessments.

WIHD offers Intensive Parenting Support for Parents with Intellectual Disabilities (NY UCEDD/LEND)

Project IMPACT is an intensive, home-based parenting program that was created at WIHD to meet the needs of parents with intellectual/learning disabilities in Westchester County, NY. Project IMPACT's evidence-based curriculum was developed to assist parents with intellectual disabilities in developing parenting skills.

Background on why a Medicaid per capita cap/block grant would lead to devastating cuts in Medicaid

The health plan that Speaker Paul Ryan and other House Republican leaders unveiled today would radically restructure Medicaid by forcing states to accept reductions in federal funding for their Medicaid programs through either a per capita cap or a block grant, both of which would shrink federal funding for state Medicaid programs over time, relative to current law. This would shift significant costs to states and almost certainly lead states to cut Medicaid substantially over time, potentially placing millions of low-income Americans at risk of losing part or all of their health coverage...

AUCD Announces 2016 Emerging Leader Scholarship Recipients

The Emerging Leader Scholarship Fund was established to support emerging leaders in the AUCD Network with an emphasis on self-advocates, family members, and early career professionals. Recipients receive a travel scholarship and registration funds for the AUCD Conference in Washington, DC, where they gain valuable opportunities in networking, mentorship, and professional growth.

East Meets West: Helping entrepreneurs who have disabilities make dreams a reality (IL UCEDD/LEND)

In 2010, Renko began a collaboration with Sarah Parker Harris, professor of disability and human development, to begin a pilot program called Participation Through Innovation, which led to a second collaboration, the Chicagoland Entrepreneurship Education for People with Disabilities (CEED). The effort, funded by a two-year, $300,000 grant by the Coleman Foundation in 2014, provides support for entrepreneurs with disabilities.
