"CDD Reads" Program Opens New Doors to Learning and Language Development (IA UCEDD)

Thanks to a new, multi-media reading program housed within the Center for Disabilities and Development (CDD-Iowa UCEDD) Healy Clinic, patients are developing language skills, increasing interactions with family members, and having fun all at the same time. Entitled "CDD Reads," the program represents a collaboration among four Iowa Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (ILEND) speech-language pathology trainees, a CDD speech-language pathologist, and two CDD-based programs: the Iowa Program for Assistive Technology (IPAT) and Disability Resource Library (DRL).

An Inspiring Conference: AACPDM (OR LEND)

The goal of the AACPDM to provide science-based education for health professionals, promote excellence in research, and encourage exceptional services for the benefit of people with and at risk for childhood-onset disabilities, like cerebral palsy. As a LEND trainee, this meeting offered me the opportunity to network, to learn, and to be inspired by leaders in the field of developmental medicine.I

AUCD Statement on New ESEA Language

The Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) is pleased the House-Senate conference committee on the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) has agreed upon final legislative language to replace No Child Left Behind (NCLB).

HDI's Community Based Work Transition Program gives students with disabilities a more secure future (KY UCEDD)

It is important for all people to be able to enter the workforce and have a quality of life that makes them happy, regardless of any disability. The Human Development Institute's (HDI) Community Based Work Transition Program (CBWTP) assists those with disabilities in joining the workforce as they transition from high school to adult life. HDI's program is different from others of its kind by focusing on students with significant disabilities who require a personalized vocational service in order to obtain and maintain employment.

MCHB Welcomes Hae Young Park as Deputy Director, Division of MCH Workforce Development

Hae Young Park has been part of the MCHB family since 2000 when she began her federal career with MCHB's Research Program as a Presidential Management Intern. As part of the MCH Research Program team, Hae Young has been a Project Officer, Team Lead and most recently Acting Director, involved in the development and oversight of MCHB's extramural research programs.With the expansion of MCHB's research programs resulting from new appropriations for autism and other developmental disabilities research in 2008, Hae Young provided leadership in the development of MCHB's autism intervention research programs, including multi-million dollar research networks and investigator-initiated research projects addressing the needs of underserved populations.

New National Center at The Institute on Community Integration (ICI) Examines Outcome Measures (MN UCEDD/LEND)

The Institute on Community Integration (ICI) (MN UCEDD) has received a five-year, $4.4 million grant from the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to launch the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Home and Community Based Services Outcome Measurement (RRTC/OM). The center will help improve instruments and procedures used to collect data nationwide on how well HCBS-funded programs do what they're intended to do in supporting quality-of-life outcomes important to people with disabilities.

Dr. Ganz has a publication that is currently the featured article for the journal Augmentative and Alternative Communication and to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the journal and Augmentative and Alternative Communication Awareness Month.

Rural Institute for Inclusive Communities (MT UCEDD) CAC Featured Prominently at Transition Conference

Thirteen members of the Rural Institute Consumer Advisory Council (CAC) traveled to Great Falls, Montana, in November for the 2015 Montana Youth in Transition Conference. Young adult and parent CAC members presented two workshops ("Puzzle Pieces: Putting Together the Pieces of Adult Life" and "SMART Surfing: Tips for Staying Safe on the Internet"); co-presented with representatives from various agencies at five additional workshops; hosted an information and resource table at the Youth Vendor Fair; recruited CAC members from underrepresented areas of the state; and nominated Emerging Leaders to share their stories of inclusive employment, education, housing, and/or recreation with other Montanans.

Taylor Carley Named First Self-Advocacy Coordinator at Institute for Disability Studies (MS UCEDD)

Taylor Carley of Hattiesburg has been named self-advocacy coordinator at The University of Southern Mississippi Institute for Disability Studies (IDS). Carley is the first to hold this newly created position which highlights IDS' commitment to promoting self-advocacy in Mississippi with a focus on youth and young adults. "We are very excited that Taylor Carley is joining our staff as the first young adult self-advocacy coordinator at IDS," said Dr. Rebekah Young, associate director. "We have been fortunate to watch him mature and develop into a leader among his peers through his service as a TRIAD AmeriCorps member and involvement with the STEP Up to Leadership Council. We look forward to working with Taylor to further IDS' mission to enhance the quality of life for Mississippians with disabilities of all ages." Carley began volunteering at IDS in 2012 with the STEP UP to Leadership Council and with the youth-focused programs.

The Center Welcomes Mary Whirley as the New Program Coordinator for PATHS. Organization: Center on Disability and Development at Texas A&M University (TX UCEDD)

Mary is currently a graduate student in the Educational Psychology department at Texas A&M. She graduated with her Bachelor's from the University of North Texas in Spanish Language and Literature. Prior to her time here at A&M, she worked as a special education teacher for 4 years at a private school in Dallas.

Art Installation at Capitol Rotunda Features the Voices and Images of People with Disabilities (PA UCEDD)

Through image and audio interviews, Here. Stories from Selinsgrove Center and KenCrest Services invites viewers to meet 19 people with intellectual disabilities who live and work in Pennsylvania. The settings (a State center and a sheltered workshop) may be new to many viewers, but the exhibit offers insight into the lives of the "narrators" by way of 18 volunteer "interviewers" who visited them at the Selinsgrove Center and KenCrest Services in the spring of 2015.

Thanks for a Great AUCD2015 Conference!
