ACL Awards Grants for UCEDD Diversity Fellowships

This week AIDD, a part of ACL, awarded National Training Initiative grants to 14 University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDDs) to support a one-year diversity fellowship at each UCEDD.

Andy Imparato Welcomes the GU Certificate in Early Intervention 2015-2016 Cohort (DC UCEDD)

The 2015-2016 cohort of the GU Certificate in Early Intervention program was welcomed by Andy Imparao, Executive Director of the AUCD. Andy met with the students during lunch providing them with a "birds-eye" view of disability policy. The event was part of the two-day orientation to the GU Certificate in Early Intervention program. Participants of the program include all members of the interdisciplinary team of early intervention service providers. This year's cohort includes a physician from the United Arab Emirates, an early childhood teacher from Mexico, and the Director of an early intervention program in Lebanon in addition to early intervention practitioners from the DC area.

HDI's Family Mentorship Program Kicks into High Gear (KY UCEDD/LEND)

Human Development Institute (HDI) has led a family mentorship program that matches university students with families including a child or adolescent with a significant disability in order to give the students a chance to interact with these families outside of a clinical or academic setting and learn first-hand from the family's experience. As a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, HDI's family mentorship program prepares students for their future work as professionals and clinicians working with individuals with developmental disabilities.

Mary Lee Fay Named New NASDDDS Executive Director

The Board of Directors of the National Association of State Directors of Developmental Disabilities Services has named Mary Lee Fay to replace Nancy Thaler as the Association�s Executive Director. Mary Lee has been working with NASDDDS since 2012 as the Director of National Core Indicators and Coordinator of the Supporting Families Community of Practice. Nancy Thaler left the organization on July 1st to become the Deputy Secretary of the Office of Developmental Programs in Pennsylvania.

MN UCEDD Partners with Russian University to Improve Education of Students with Disabilities

The Institute on Community Integration (ICI), University of Minnesota, is partnering with Krasnoyarsk State Pedagogical University (KSPU) in Siberia to improve the inclusion of Russian students with significant cognitive disabilities in elementary and secondary schools. Through the Global Signature Grants Program of the University of Minnesota's College of Education and Human Development (CEHD), and the Eurasia Foundation�s U.S.�Russia University Partnership Program, the Institute's Brian Abery and Ren�ta Tich� have recently received additional funds to help grow an existing collaboration between ICI and KSPU that resulted in establishment of the International Institute on Progress Monitoring (IIPM) in Fall 2014. The new funding will go toward supporting ongoing academic and cultural exchange of ideas, research, priorities, and policies between the two countries, and help sustain IIPM long-term.

Rural Institute for Inclusive Communities (MT UCEDD) Announces Inaugural Award Recipient of the Community Investment Fund

To promote community inclusion and provide leadership and advocacy opportunities for Consumer Advisory Council (CAC) members, the University of Montana Rural Institute for Inclusive Communities (RIIC) established a Community Investment Fund (CIF) and invited CAC members to administer the fund. For 2015, $2000 was made available through the CIF for innovative projects or programs to help people with disabilities live, learn, work and play in their communities alongside people without disabilities.

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD, IDDRC, LEND) Member Leads Affordable Housing Partnership

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD, IDDRC, LEND) member Jaco Hamman, Ph.D., associate professor of Religion, Psychology, and Culture at Vanderbilt Divinity School, is leading the development of an affordable housing model that brings together Vanderbilt Divinity School students with young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It is believed to be the first of its kind in Tennessee. Located in the Chestnut Hill area, Divinity Friendship House at Vanderbilt provides low-cost housing to eight students and three individuals who are all on the autism spectrum.*

The Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD, IDDRC, LEND) welcomed musicians and scientists to the 2015 biennial meeting of the Society of Music Perception and Cognition (SMPC) Conference and the Vanderbilt Music and Mind Kickoff. Music researchers from around the globe flew into Nashville Aug. 1-5 to attend the biennial conference.

VIUCEDD Welcomes New Associate Director

In May 2015, Dr. Karen Harris Brown joined the VIUCEDD staff as Associate Director for research, evaluation, and grant development. While she is the newest member of the VIUCEDD team, Dr. Brown is no stranger to the Virgin Islands. She is a native Virgin Islander who recently returned home after 29 years of living on the U.S. mainland. When the opportunity arose, Dr. Brown jumped at the chance of returning to the place that was instrumental in shaping her into who she is today. She is a proud Chicken Hawk (C.A.H.S. class of 1986) and former member of the Rising Stars Youth Steel Orchestra. She is a first generation college student who participated in the University Bound program (formerly Upward Bound) at the University of the Virgin Islands (formerly College of the Virgin Islands). She is grateful for these experiences and what others did to sow into her life. Now, it is her goal to �pay it forward� by positively impacting the lives of all she comes in contact with. Young Adults with Autism Show Improved Social Function Following UCLA Skills Program (CA UCEDD)

Gains from 'PEERS' training persist 16 weeks later

Researchers at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA have found that a social skills program for high-functioning young adults with autism spectrum disorder significantly improved the participants' ability to engage with their peers.

Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities Health Disparities Initiative: Geo-mapping and Networking to Improve Health Services for Individuals with IDD (NY UCEDD/LEND)

The Health Disparities Initiative at Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities focuses on providing training for healthcare professionals, providing and improving health services to individuals with IDD, and conducting research that provides insights about health system delivery and the needs of individuals with IDD. The Initiative is currently developing two exciting new projects that will provide more information about service providers, gaps and barriers to servicing individuals with IDD in Western NY.
