Center for Disabilities and Development Host Two Inclusive Family Events (IA UCEDD)

The Center for Disabilities and Development, Iowa's University Center for Excellence on Disabilities hosted two inclusive family events in early June. Both events allowed children of all abilities and their siblings to come together to enjoy the outdoors. Fish Day was a joint effort between CDD, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and CAST for Kids Foundation. Families spent the day fishing; the DNR stocked the pond so everyone was able to catch a fish or two. Easter Seals provided adaptive fishing equipment to meet all participants' needs.

The White House and the Center for American Progress hosted a forum on criminal justice reform and people with disabilities. Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD, LEND, IDDRC) Investigator Develops Tool to Assess Implicit Biases Related to Individuals Who Stutter

More than 3 million Americans stutter. Stuttering is characterized by disruptions in the production of speech sounds, usually begins in early childhood, and can persist throughout life. The documented stigmatizing attitudes of others put children who stutter at an increased risk for experiences such as aggression and bullying, and therefore the disorder often has a negative impact on children's development in educational, social, and vocational spheres of life.

Bill Kiernan to Receive 2016 NASDDDS Compass Award (MA UCEDD/LEND)

The ICI's executive director, Bill Kiernan, will be the 2016 recipient of the Robert M. Gettings Compass Award from the National Association of State Directors of Developmental Disabilities Services (NASDDDS). The Compass Award honors people working in the private sector who have made impressive contributions to publicly funded state service systems for people with developmental disabilities.

Murphy, Fudge Introduce Stronger Together School Diversity Act of 2016

The Stronger Together Diversity Act has been endorsed by the Association of University Centers on Disabilities, National Education Association, American Federation of Teachers, the National Urban League, National Women's Law Center and more.

U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), member of the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, and Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (Ohio-11), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education of the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce, on Tuesday introduced the Stronger Together School Diversity Act of 2016 to promote diversity in schools. The bill builds on President Obama's FY 2017 Stronger Together budget proposal, and consists of a voluntary program to support the development and expansion of new and existing community-driven strategies to increase diversity in America's schools.

Now Archived UCEDD Grants Management Series: Needs Assessment for UCEDD Core Grant

The UCEDD core grant application must be based on data-driven strategic planning, per 45 CFR 1388.5(c)(2). State- or Territory-wide needs assessments typically inform this strategic planning process and are discussed in the "Problem Statement" section of the UCEDD core grant application. This webinar will present results of a network-wide survey of how needs assessments are implemented, the Florida Center for Inclusive Communities' experience in conducting their needs assessment, and will provide significant opportunity for discussion. Colleen McLaughlin, MEd (NJ UCEDD) Honored with the Distinction of Fellow of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Colleen McLaughlin, MEd, Community Training and Technical Assistance Manager at The Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities (NJ UCEDD) was honored with the distinction of Fellow of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD). The ceremony was held at AAIDD's 140th Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia on June 8, 2016.

MCHB Expands National Footprint of LEND Training Programs

The Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) within the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has announced funding awards for a record 52 Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) programs. These programs, which are located at universities and hospitals across the country, prepare trainees from a wide variety of professional disciplines to assume leadership roles in the delivery of services to children with autism and other neurodevelopmental disabilities in clinical practice, research, and public policy.

Becoming a Leader on the Rosebud Indian Reservation (SD UCEDD/LEND)

Whitney Jones and Vanessa Sully, both Human Services majors at Sinte Gleska University on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in Mission, SD, are Diversity Fellows funded through a National Training Initiative grant to the USD Center for Disabilities.
