AUCD Celebrates the Anniversary of the Olmstead Decision

Urges the Senate to Oppose any Bill that would threaten community-based services

Today is the 18th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court's Olmstead decision which declared that people with disabilities have a right to live and participate in their communities. Unfortunately, on the same day of the anniversary of this landmark decision, the Senate released a health care bill that threatens this right by fundamentally altering the Medicaid program.

AUCD Welcomes Edward Suggs as Director of Finance and Grant Administration

Edward Suggs is the Director of Finance and Grant Administration at the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD). He manages the financial operations and plays a key role in developing the organization's budget and oversight of the year-end audit. Edward joined AUCD in June 2017.

Tuesdays with Liz: Advocacy and Leadership and Dreams

Today on 'Tuesdays with Liz: Disability Policy for All,' Liz interviews Xian (She-ahn) Horn, a self-proclaimed "joyful half-Asian woman with Cerebral Palsy, who serves as teacher, speaker, beauty advocate, and blogger." Xian traveled to Washington, DC, in the spring courtesy of the AUCD DREAM Fund where she met with staffers of her members of Congress and attended the 2017 AUCD4all gala. In this interview, Liz and Xian talk about leadership, advocacy, and the beauty within us all.

SELN Systematic Instruction Series: A three-part online series for employment specialists (MA UCEDD/LEND)

This spring, the State Employment Leadership Network hosted a 3-part online series on systematic instruction (SI) taught by nationally-known trainer, Teri Johnson. SI uses task analysis preparation, design, and strategies to help individuals with disabilities improve job performance and increase autonomy. Johnson shared original videos and stories to demonstrate the ways employment specialist can engage SI when the complexity of a task presents challenges to the learner.

Embedding Cultural Diversity and Cultural and Linguistic Competence: A Guide for UCEDD Curricula and Training Activities

A new project and website from the UCEDDs at Georgetown, Georgia State, and Children's Hospital Los Angeles, and in collaboration with AUCD

This project and website is designed to research, develop, and disseminate a set or resources for the national network of UCEDDs to embed cultural diversity and cultural and linguistic competence in their curricula and training activities.

ICI Partners with AUCD to Host ADA International Fellows from Tanzania and Kenya (MA UCEDD/LEND)

AUCD partnered with ICI-UMass Boston to host the ADA International Fellowship Program on Inclusive Education, which is sponsored by U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, to host Fellows from Tanzania and Kenya. Heike Boeltzig-Brown and Miwa Tanabe worked with AUCD to identify and recruit 20 mid-career professionals from Brazil, Kenya, Peru, and Tanzania, who have come to the US for 5 weeks and are working with faculty and staff at UCED's around the states. The Fellows learned about best practices in inclusive education in the U.S. and then will apply what they learned in an individualized inclusive education project or initiative that they will implement upon return to their home countries.

Diversity Fellows Grant Project Leads to Leadership Opportunity for Self Advocates (NM LEND)

As a New Mexico LEND Self-Advocacy trainee, Daniel Ekman worked with faculty mentor Phyllis Shingle to create a document with leadership competencies, objectives and activities for people with disabilities. The idea was to develop a document that organizations could use and adapt as part of their own leadership curriculum for individuals with disabilities.

The Boggs Center Celebrates Graduation of the Inaugural 2016-2017 NJLEND Cohort

The inaugural cohort of fellows graduated from The Boggs Center's New Jersey Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (NJLEND) program. The NJLEND Maternal and Child Health Leadership Symposium was held at Children's Specialized Hospital, New Brunswick, and featured a keynote address from Sue Swenson, MBA, Vice President, Inclusion International and former Assistant Secretary for the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, US Department of Education.

Today on 'Tuesdays with Liz: Disability Policy for All,' Liz interviews Christine Liao, a program specialist at AUCD and a deaf woman. In this interview, they discuss Christine's experience growing up and entering the workforce as a deaf professional, deaf culture, and some of the accommodations deaf people might need to fully participate in the community and workplace.

Armenian Delegations Visit MN UCEDD

Two delegations from Armenia visited the Institute on Community Integration (MN UCEDD) in April as part of a project funded by UNICEF Armenia focusing on inclusive education. The collaborative project between ICI and Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU) is titled, Enhancing the Inclusion of Children and Youth with Disabilities in Armenia: University of Minnesota/Armenian State Pedagogical University Partnership. The nine visitors spent two weeks in Minnesota, meeting with Renata Ticha and Brian Abery, who are ICI's co-directors on the project, and visiting other sites related to inclusive education. "Self-advocacy and advocacy for people with disabilities were two important concepts the delegations wanted to learn about and to explore with ICI colleagues and with self-advocates," says Ticha. The delegations included Karine Harutyunyan, the Deputy Minister of Education of Armenia; Mher Melik-Bakhshyan, the Pro-rector of Special Education at Armenian State Pedagogical University; as well as additional ASPU faculty and several education officers from UNICEF Armenia.

Melissa Ortiz Appointed New Commissioner of the Administration on Disabilities

Melissa describes herself as a compassionate conservative who is enthusiastic about working with both sides of the aisle on behalf of Americans with disabilities. Throughout her life, she has been an active advocate for people with disabilities, working to ensure people with disabilities have the opportunity to fully participate in society. She is particularly passionate about improving employment opportunities and eliminating barriers - such as a lack of accessible transportation - that can prevent people with disabilities from being able to work.

The Center on Disability and Development at Texas A&M University announces the 2017 PATHS (TX UCEDD)

The Postsecondary Access and Training in Human Services (PATHS) program at Texas A&M University is honored to announce the 2017 graduates. This year, 36 young men and women successfully graduated from the PATHS certificate program. The PATHS certificate program was developed in 2010 by Dr. Cheryl Grenwelge, Director of Transition Service Programs, Associate Professor, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension while working with the Center on Disability and Development at Texas A&M University. The PATHS program is an inclusive certificate program to prepare students with and without disabilities for a career as a Direct Support Professional, who will work with the elderly or people with disabilities in the community; as a Direct Support Para-Professional who will work with school districts; or as a Child Care Professional who will work with children.

What Works for Youth? Tracking Vocational Rehabilitation Outcomes (MA UCEDD/LEND)

The Institute for Community Inclusion's Meg Grigal was on an invited panel of presenters and discussed The Role and Impact of Vocational Rehabilitation in Inclusive Higher Education for Students with Intellectual Disability and Autism. The inclusion of Think College on a national panel helps to increase the visibility of the the ICI, and the topic of inclusive higher education for people with intellectual disability.
