Derek Nord Named New Director of Indiana Institute on Disability and Community (IN UCEDD)

Following a national search, Derek Nord has been appointed the new director of the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community at Indiana University. Nord is currently associate director of the Research and Training Center on Community Living, a part of the University of Minnesota's Institute on Community Integration.

Training the Next Generation of Leaders in ASD (WA LEND)

The CHDD LEND training program provides a hands-on, interdisciplinary curriculum that prepares professionals for leadership roles in the field of autism spectrum disorder and related developmental disabilities. One third of LEND graduates go on to work primarily in the field of autism.

US Department of Labor Signs Alliance Agreement to Increase Inclusion of Workers with Disabilities

Association of University Centers on Disabilities latest in collaboration effort

To promote inclusive workplaces that embrace the skills and talents of workers with disabilities, the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy signed an alliance agreement today with the Association of University Centers on Disabilities.

HANDS in Autism Model in Practice: Intensive Weeklong Training for School Personnel & Community Providers (IN UCEDD)

An intensive training that focuses on providing hands-on experience and coaching in a simulated community & home environment. While the program includes traditional instructional methods such as lectures and discussion, the emphasis of training is incorporating interactive and hands-on application to foster increased participant knowledge and skill related to the process of making and supporting appropriate programming decisions for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other neurodevelopmental and behavioral disorders.

Legal Planning for Young Adults with Disabilities (MD UCEDD)

Professor Angela Vallario and attorney Louise Michaux Gonzales delivered a free seminar to Kennedy Krieger young adult patients, students, and their families about estate planning considerations and decision-making capacity. Project HEAL (Health, Education, Advocacy, and Law) attorneys, 22 law students, and nine attorneys from the legal community completed 12 powers of attorney, 11 advance directives, and four advance directives for mental health with participants. Each participant also competed a needs assessment regarding other civil legal needs.

Mercedes Avila: 2016 Changemaker Local Hero Award Winner from the Child Mind Institute

MCC Chair and VT LEND Co-Director Honored for Work with Disadvantaged Populations

The 2016 Local Hero Award Winner, Dr. Avila is dedicated to serving children and youth at the margins: refugees and immigrants, teens struggling with mental health problems and young adults affected by substance abuse. She has secured funding for programs that address these critical issues, and works to eliminate inequality in access to resources and programming.

Kentucky Peer Support Network Project Fosters Friendship and Inclusion for Students with Disabilities (KY UCEDD)

For students with disabilities, it can sometimes be difficult to engage with their peers, both socially as well as academically. The Kentucky Peer Support Network Project aims to assist in connecting these students with their peers through two initiatives: Peer Support Arrangements and Peer Networks. Both efforts are being piloted in Kentucky schools today, and work in tandem to lay the groundwork for genuine friendships among all students who participate.

April is Autism Awareness Month, But Should It Be Autism Acceptance Month? (VA UCEDD/LEND)

An opinion article authored by the son of a VA LEND trainee.

"Every year on April 2nd, the world celebrates World Autism Awareness Day. In 2008, spearheaded by the state of Qatar, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously declared April 2nd as World Autism Awareness Day "to highlight the need to help improve the quality of life of those with autism so they can lead full and meaningful lives as an integral part of society."

Dr. Cheryl Grenwelge Promoted to Associate Professor (TX UCEDD)

Dr. Cheryl Grenwelge wears many "hats" at Texas A&M University. She is dually appointed as an Associate Professor the AgriLife Sciences and the Center on Disability and Development as the Director of Transition Service Programs. Her research interests include transition services, postsecondary education, self-determination, and youth leadership development.
