AUCD Statement on Release of President's Budget Request

Current federal investments do not meet the needs of a growing and aging population of Americans with disabilities. Instead of investing to address this gap, the President's proposed budget represents an aggressive retreat from a decades-long, bipartisan commitment to supporting the health and independence of people with disabilities.

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD, IDDRC, LEND) Addressing Needs of Family Caregivers of Aging Adults with Down syndrome

In a paper published in the Journal of Policy and Practice in Intellectual Disabilities*, Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD, LIDDRC, LEND) investigators explore the growing issues of family caregiving for aging adults with Down syndrome. Robert Hodapp, Ph.D., Vanderbilt professor of Special Education, Richard C. Urbano, Ph.D., Vanderbilt research professor in Pediatrics, and Meghan Burke, Ph.D., BCBA-D, assistant professor of Special Education at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (and former VKC trainee!) report.

OAR is developing a new resource tool to help people with autism navigate sex education and understand sexuality. This subject can be daunting and is often overlooked. At the same time, it is important in terms of personal growth, development, and safety. We are excited to create a resource on this topic that is specific to the needs of people with autism. 'Resilience' Study Examines How People with Disabilities Live Successfully in Rural Areas (MT UCEDD)

Living in a small town can be challenging for anyone - but for people with disabilities, rural areas can create even more serious barriers to accomplishing the things they want to do. However, with the help of a trait known as resilience, many people with disabilities who live in rural areas have achieved a good quality of life and are able to participate in their communities.

Celebration of Diversity, Teamwork, and the Future! (AZ UCEDD)

Northern Arizona University celebrated the accomplishments of the 2017 Hispanic, Latino and Chicano graduates at the 24th Annual Hispanic Convocation. Ms. Valeria Chase, bilingual specialist at the Institute for Human Development (IHD), served as member of the committee and put together a spectacular and energetic evening with distinguished guest, Mr. Claudio Sanchez, and a keynote address from Dr. Monica Brown who is a known for her bilingual children's books.

GPS - Guiding People Through Systems, Online Care Notebook (OH UCEDD/LEND)

GPS, Guiding People Through Systems, is an online care notebook designed to help families organize medical and school records in one convenient, online resource. The tool was developed through a partnership between The University of Cincinnati Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCCEDD), Ohio Department of Health, Family Voices of Ohio, Ohio Medical Home and the Autism Treatment Network (ATN) at Nationwide Children's Hospital.

2017 Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps JD (MD UCEDD)

Moyo Koya is a rising second-year law student at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, who has been accepted into the 2017 Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps JD Program to work 300 hours with Project HEAL (Health, Education, Advocacy, and Law) at Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. Project HEAL is medical-legal partnership that provides advocacy and legal services to children with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are patients at Kennedy Krieger Institute. Moyo earned a bachelor of science in neurobiology and physiology from the University of Maryland, College Park.

2017 recipients of the Alfred Healy Leadership Award in Developmental Disabilities (IA UCEDD)

The Center for Disabilities and Development (CDD) is very proud to announce that Jessica Gallegos, Matthew O�Brien, PhD, BCBA-D and Caitlin Owens, MSW are the 2017 recipients of the Alfred Healy Leadership Award in Developmental Disabilities. The purpose of the Alfred Healy Leadership Award in Developmental Disabilities is to nurture in recipients a life-long commitment to leadership in developmental disabilities that will carry on Dr. Healy�s legacy for future generations. Dr. Healy, who passed away in April of 2012, was a world-renowned pediatrician and educator who devoted his life to caring for children with developmental disabilities. He served as the director of the Center for Disabilities and Development, Iowa�s nationally designated University Center for Excellence on Disabilities, from 1977 until he retired in 1998.

RTC: Rural Research Associate Awarded Prestigious Research and Policy Fellowship (MT UCEDD)

Dr. Jennifer Wong, RTC:Rural Research Associate, has been awarded a Training Fellowship in Rehabilitation Policy Research with the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Healthy Aging & Physical Disability at the University of Washington (UW). The two-year fellowship consists of a year of rehabilitation research at UW, followed by a year of policy research in Washington, D.C. Wong will join one other postdoctoral researcher to make up the fellowship's second cohort. The fellowship will begin in October 2017.

Texas Center for Disability Studies Welcomes Nina Zuna! (TX UCEDD)

The Texas Center for Disability Studies at the University of Texas at Austin is pleased to welcome Dr. Nina Zuna as the Associate Director. Dr. Zuna comes to TCDS after working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Special Education at UT-Austin. Dr. Zuna has over 20 years of experience working with individuals with disabilities and their families in a variety of roles including, professor, researcher, certified special education teacher, and in-home/in-school behavioral skills trainer.
