April is Autism Awareness Month, But Should It Be Autism Acceptance Month? (VA UCEDD/LEND)

An opinion article authored by the son of a VA LEND trainee.

"Every year on April 2nd, the world celebrates World Autism Awareness Day. In 2008, spearheaded by the state of Qatar, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously declared April 2nd as World Autism Awareness Day "to highlight the need to help improve the quality of life of those with autism so they can lead full and meaningful lives as an integral part of society."

Dr. Cheryl Grenwelge Promoted to Associate Professor (TX UCEDD)

Dr. Cheryl Grenwelge wears many "hats" at Texas A&M University. She is dually appointed as an Associate Professor the AgriLife Sciences and the Center on Disability and Development as the Director of Transition Service Programs. Her research interests include transition services, postsecondary education, self-determination, and youth leadership development.

Dr. Jennifer Hall-Lande (MN UCEDD) Appointed MN Act Early Ambassador

Dr. Jennifer Hall-Lande of the Institute on Community Integration has been selected as Minnesota's 2016-18 Act Early Ambassador by the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Association of University Centers on Disabilities. This marks the start of her second two-year term as the Minnesota point-of-contact for the CDC's nationwide "Learn the Signs. Act Early." program to improve early identification of developmental delays and disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorder.

LEND Audiology Trainees Learn and Shine at EHDI 2016

On March 13-15, AUCD members joined nearly 1,000 diverse stakeholders in San Diego, CA, at the 15th annual Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Meeting, organized jointly by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, and the National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management at Utah State University.

Making the "Healthy Relationships" Curriculum Accessible for Students with Disabilities Attending Postsecondary Education Programs (TX UCEDD)

Christi Hays, MEd, CHES, is a Health Education doctoral student at Texas A&M University. As an undergraduate at Texas A&M, she was a peer health educator and worked to address the sexual health issues of college students. As a doctoral student, Christi works for iTP3, an OAH funded project to support innovative teen pregnancy prevention programs, and her research focuses on sexual health in under-served populations.

The Power of Partnership: Project HEAL, RE/MAX Preferred, & Bertha's Mussels (MD UCEDD)

RE/MAX Preferred and Bertha's Mussels celebrated their partnership with Project HEAL (Heath, Education, Advocacy, and Law). A community-based program of the Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities, Project HEAL is Maryland's only comprehensive medical-legal partnership. Attorneys provide advocacy and legal services to hundreds of low- and moderate-income Kennedy Krieger patients and their families.

Travis Hamil, PATHS Program Assistant (TX UCEDD)

Travis credits his time with the Postsecondary Access and Training in Human Services (PATHS) program for helping feel more confident because he learned how to use the city buses to access the community and what to expect as a college student. After spending a year as a direct support professional with a group home, Travis was hired as a Program Assistant with the PATHS Program. He now supports students in the classroom, provides assistive technology training, mentors students in developing their independent living skills, and supports staff with day-to-day activities.

'Camp Yes And' for Teens on the Autism Spectrum Doubling its Impact in 2016 (IN UCEDD)

At 'Camp Yes And,' teens and teachers learn improv as a way to develop social communication skills and transform teaching and learning. The camp is designed to support verbal teens (ages 13-18) on the autism spectrum, or those with a similar diagnosis, who would benefit from support around building social communication skills.

AUCD Welcomes New Staffer Jennifer Tuell

Jennifer Tuell is the Program Assistant at AUCD. She supports administrative actions through different departments and contributions with needs regarding projects. In addition, she works to assist development with AUCD and upholds the values and mission of the organization daily. Jennifer obtained her MA from Gallaudet University in Deaf studies: Language and Human Rights program. Within this experience, she was fortunate to gain skills to develop advocacy and policy approaches for disability rights.

Wolf Wolfensberger Documentary Available from the RTC (MN UCEDD/LEND & PA-Temple UCEDD)

The Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Community Living for People with Intellectual Disabilities (RTC/CL) has released a film, "Valuing Lives: Wolf Wolfensberger and the Principle of Normalization." The film explores the principle of normalization, an idea that challenged fundamental assumptions about people with intellectual disabilities. It also features the iconoclastic professor whose intense, multi-day workshops trained thousands of human services professionals in the theory and practice of this idea.

Expanding Our Knowledge About the Science of Autism: Achievements from IDDRCs

Scientists from the nation's 15 IDDRCs continue to make groundbreaking contributions to the ways in which we understand autism. Their work not only deepens scientific knowledge of the genetics of autism but also exposes new forms of ASD and helps identify abnormalities in brain structure and function that may explain behaviors found in individuals with autism. The output of IDDRC researchers forms an essential foundation for those with autism and the communities that support them.
