2013 IACC Summary of Advances in Autism Spectrum Disorder Research Now Available

The Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC) and the Office of Autism Research Coordination are pleased to announce the release of the 2013 IACC Summary of Advances in Autism Spectrum Disorder Research in conjunction with the celebration of National Autism Awareness Month. The 2013 IACC Summary of Advances is a collection of brief summaries of studies selected by the IACC as the twenty most significant biomedical and services research advances in the field of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) research in 2013.

Request for Information (RFI): Impact of DSM-5 Changes to Diagnostic Criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) on Research and Services

NIH released a Request for Information (RFI) to seek input from the scientific community, health professionals, self-advocates, family members, and other community stakeholders on the biomedical and services research implications of recent changes to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) diagnostic criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).

LEND Directors Meeting Materials Available

This meeting was held in Washington, DC, in conjunction with the Disability Policy Seminar. Significant time was spent on discussing the following topics: training opportunities in transition, trainee long-term follow up surveys, increased participation of self-advocacy trainees, trainee diversity efforts, examining LEND programs, the new MCH Workforce Development Center, LEND leadership training, AUCD Network Strategic Planning, the need to reauthorize the Combating Autism Act, and regional group work.

Royal Walker, JD, Appointed to the National Council on Disability

President Obama has appointed Royal Walker, JD - Executive Director of the Mississippi University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD), the Institute for Disability Studies at the University of Southern Mississippi - to the National Council on Disability. Royal is a past AUCD President and has served on the board of directors of the American Task Force for the Homeless, the Governor's Interagency Coordinating Council for Children with Special Needs, the Mississippi Council on Developmental Disabilities, and the Mississippi March of Dimes. AUCD congratulates Royal Walker on the appointment.

Senator Harkin Introduces 'Six By '15 Campaign'

During an evening reception at the Disability Policy Seminar, Senator Harkin officially announced the start of the "6 By '15" campaign - an national effort to work on six national goals by the end of 2015, the year that marks the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and 40th anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Senator Harkin Announces New 6x15 Campaign

Six organizations commit to six goals by the end of 2015

At the Disability Policy Seminar on Monday night, Senator Harkin announced a new campaign led by six national disability organizations to achieve six national goals by the end of 2015, marking major anniversaries of the ADA and IDEA.
