Announcing National Disability Voter Registration Week 2017

The REV UP Campaign coordinates National Disability Voter Registration Week each year to increase the political power of people with disabilities while also engaging candidates and the media to recognize the disability community. This year, National Disability Voter Registration Week will be held on July 17-21, 2017.

UC UCEDD takes part in Cincinnati Reelabilities Film Festival to Reach 12,000+ with Films on Disability

This year, March 9-12 marks the fourth year University of Cincinnati UCEDD will participate in the Cincinnati ReelAbilities Film Festival. ReelAbilities presents award-winning films by and about people with disabilities, while also planning initiatives around town related to accessibility and inclusion. The film has grown exponentially in recent years to expand to year-round programming that has led to city-wide discussions around employment of people with disabilities to school-based film screenings to promote inclusion of students with disabilities.

A Personal Story of a Cultural Broker (MA UCEDD/LEND)

To increase equity and access while respecting the unique cultural values of families from diverse communities, service providers must reach out to and reciprocally engage parents. By building mutual relationships and offering appropriate materials, cultural brokering groups like mine can empower parents and ensure service provision is culturally and linguistically appropriate.

WVU CED Feeding & Swallowing Clinic's 1000th Visit

On a snowy February morning, the Jackson family from St. Albans, West Virginia traveled to Morgantown to be seen by the Feeding & Swallowing Clinic team at the West Virginia University Center for Excellence in Disabilities (WVU CED). Maxwell Jackson is the Feeding & Swallowing Clinic's 1000th visit, a milestone moment for the WVU CED and a truly special little boy.

Nutrition Efforts Reaching Disability Community with Support from Walmart Foundation to Association of University Centers on Disabilities

Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) expands its health efforts with the launch of "Nutrition is for Everyone," made possible by a $420,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation. Five AUCD-member centers will implement a one-year project providing nutrition education for an estimated 25,000 people with disabilities living in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Tennessee. Based on available public health data, these states are areas where people with disabilities are least likely to be consuming fruits and vegetables and, therefore, in the most need for nutrition education and support.

In this week's edition of Tuesdays with Liz: Disability Policy for All Liz interviews four Nutrition is for Everyone ambassadors - Sarah Keathley (Arkansas), Lauren Griffiths (Louisiana), Lee Wallace (Tennessee), and Megan Krampe (Oklahoma). These ambassadors speak about the projects in their states that focus on how eating and learning about healthy food is important for everyone, including people with disabilities.

Section 508 Comes to the University of Hawaii (HI UCEDD), College of Education

The Media Center at the Center on Disability Studies is leading the way for compliant digital content for the University of Hawaii, College of Education (COE). Recognizing compliance with federal accessibility regulations as a need, the Dean of the COE contacted the Center on Disability Studies (CDS) for their guidance and expertise. With 15+ years of experience, the CDS Media Center (www.media.cds.hawaii.edu) has created accessible websites and digital content for CDS projects and core activities. In this newly proposed endeavor, the Media Center presented a course of action that included, collaboration with the COE training team, integration of the Utah State UCD WebAim evaluation program (webaim.org), and proposition of an accessibility policy. The importance of a proactive and manageable accessibility policy included a specific timeline for compliance of both legacy and future digital content.

2016-17 MNLEND Fellow Publishes!

Jack Reagan, current 2016-17 MNLEND Fellow recently co-published a brief based on the FINDS 2010 data surveying family caregivers. The data he analyzed within the FINDS survey focused on the emotional and physical markers affecting family caregivers. These markers have both positive and negative association to their related outcomes for family caregivers.
