"Learn the Signs. Act Early." Project Updates

The Act Early Ambassadors project is designed to develop a network of state-level experts who promote developmental monitoring and screening and improve early identification of DD/ASD practices. It is a collaborative effort on behalf of CDC's National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD), the Health Resources and Services Administration's (HRSA) Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB), the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD), and the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs (AMCHP).

Do you live and work in Alaska, American Samoa, Arkansas, Delaware, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Northern Mariana Islands, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Wyoming? AUCD, the CDC, and HRSA are excited to announce the RFA for a new 2018-2019 cohort for the Act Early Ambassadors: State and Territorial Liaisons to CDC's "Learn the Signs. Act Early." Program.

Improving Family Centeredness Together - New York State Early Intervention Initiative (NY UCEDDs)

The Westchester Institute for Human Development (WIHD; Valhalla, NY), in collaboration with Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities (Rochester, NY) and Rose F. Kennedy UCEDD (Bronx, NY), will assist the New York Bureau of Early Intervention in implementing a portion of the State Systemic Improvement Plan (SSIP).

New Cooperative Agreement to Improve Early Childhood Workforce (CT UCEDD)

UConn UCEDD Awarded $10M Cooperative Agreement to Improve Early Childhood Workforce Development through Early Childhood Personnel Center The Early Childhood Personnel Center (ECPC), funded by the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services, Department of Education, will continue and build on the work of the current Early Childhood Personnel Center to increase the capacity of State IDEA Part C and B/619 administrators, along with administrators in other early childhood service sectors and early childhood faculty teaching at institutions of higher education to improve outcomes for young children with disabilities and their families across the country.

UW-Madison Supports Scholarship Fund for Children with Special Needs (WI UCEDD/WECP)

The Athletic Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison designated the Waisman Center's Early Childhood Program as the recipient of proceeds from the Spring Football Game in April. Game receipts were directed towards the Scholarship Fund to provide tuition assistance for children enrolled in WECP, an inclusive program for children ages 1 through 5 located in the Waisman Center's UCEDD.

GU Certificate in Early Intervention Celebrates 5th Successful Year! (Georgetown UCEDD)

The GU Certificate in Early Intervention program honored the students who completed the 2016-2017 s program with a gala luncheon on June 16, 2017. The event was part of a day-long conference hosted by the Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development, University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities.

Better Hearing and Speech Month Coffee Break Webinars

May is Better Hearing and Speech Month! In celebration, OSEP's Early Childhood Assistive Technology Model Demonstration grantees and Center on Technology and Disability is partnering with the Office of Head Start's Early Childhood Hearing Outreach (ECHO) Initiative to join the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) in celebrating this year's theme "Communication: The Key to Connection." Throughout the month of May, ASHA partners with national and local stakeholders to engage in a multifaceted public education campaign to raise awareness about the critical need to intervene early when young children are identified with communication disorders. The Coffee Break Webinars will focus on raising awareness about the use of assistive technology and the importance of frequent hearing screenings. Please join the Coffee Break webinar series to learn more about assistive technology and hearing screening. There is no pre-registration to join the webinars.

"Learn the Signs. Act Early." Resources Now Available in Vietnamese

The "Learn the Signs. Act Early." Team is pleased to announce the completion of its project to translate and adapt the Milestone checklists, Milestones brochure, and tip sheets (How to Help Your Child & How to Talk to the Doctor) into Vietnamese. These materials were professionally translated and adapted in consultation with a small group of Vietnamese parents of young children and a group of Vietnamese subject matter experts.

Milestones in Action is a FREE image library that features photos and videos of children demonstrating developmental milestones from 2 months to 5 years of age. This tool was created to help parents, early care and education providers, and healthcare providers identify developmental milestones in children and know if there is cause for concern.

WV UCEDD Diversity & Disability Fellow Tackles Stigma

Louma Sebaihi is a Diversity & Disability Fellow at the West Virginia University Center for Excellence in Disabilities (WVU CED). Louma's upbringing in the Arab/American culture led her to be interested in reaching out to that community to help reduce the stigma associated with disabilities. As a part of her capstone project, Louma presented two sessions (one in English and one in Arabic) at the Islamic Center of Morgantown on the "Learn the Signs, Act Early" initiative to introduce the participants to developmental milestones that children should be achieving.

UCLA PEERS Clinic Conducts Certified Training Seminars in Australia

In August 2016, Dr. Elizabeth Laugeson, Director of Training at the Tarjan Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities at UCLA, conducted a symposium on "Parent-assisted social skills training for preschool children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): The UCLA PEERS for Preschoolers Program" at the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IASSIDD) 15th World Congress in Melbourne, Australia.

Jeffrey P. Brosco, M.D., Ph.D., a nationally recognized pediatrician and scholar at the Miller School of Medicine, has been appointed to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary's Advisory Committee on Heritable Disorders in Newborns and Children.
