Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden Partners with Cincinnati LEND Program to Improve Access and Inclusion for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities and Their Families

The Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden (CZBG), in partnership with the Cincinnati Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and related Disabilities (LEND) program, was recently awarded a Museums for America grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to advance its goal of becoming one of the nation's most welcoming, accessible, and inclusive zoos for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. The Anchor for Access and Inclusion project was one of 132 projects selected from 558 grant applications nationally.

Graduate Highlight: Sandy Smith (TX UCEDD)

Sandy Smith has been in education for over 20 years and has had the pleasure of being involved with teaching behavior management at the elementary, secondary, and adult level. Currently she is pursuing her doctorate in Special Education (Academic and Behavioral Supports) at Texas A&M.

Stephen F. Gilson, Ph.D., Coordinator and Professor of Interdisciplinary Disability Studies and Professor of Social Work, has been awarded a University of Maine Trustee Professorship for 2017-2018.

OSERS Status Report on Regulations and Guidance

Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services

OSERS is currently reviewing regulations and guidance in phases, which includes analyzing the input submitted by the public. The first phase involved reviewing guidance that OSERS has published on the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Rehab. Act), as amended. Initially, we evaluated the guidance to determine those that were outdated, unnecessary, or ineffective. At this time, OSERS has a total of 72 guidance documents that have been rescinded due to being outdated, unnecessary, or ineffective�63 from the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) and 9 from the Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA).

AUCD Summary and Analysis: Young Adults and Transitioning Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder

In September 2017, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services publicly released a report to Congress focusing on young adults and transition-age youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as mandated by the Autism CARES Act of 2014. The report summarizes existing federal initiatives (across agencies) focused on transition and identifies gaps in research, programs, and services. AUCD has developed this abbreviated summary of key findings as a resource for the LEND and DBP networks.

Support Hurricane Recovery in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands

Financial donations now being accepted

AUCD is currently accepting monetary donations to help support our Centers and DD networks in Puerto Rico (PR) and the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) to meet the needs of people with disabilities in their Territories in the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. All contributions will be funneled directly to the Territory or Territories that you designate.

David Mank, former Indiana Institute on Disability and Community director and Indiana University School of Education professor emeritus, was one of four featured speakers at a congressional briefing in celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month held on Monday, October 2, 2017, in Washington D.C.

The University of Miami Mailman Center for Child Development sent six members from the Project Self-Advocate Leadership Training (SALT) Team to the Family Cafe, from June 16th to June 18th of 2017: Shelly Baer, LCSW and founder of Project SALT, Joanne Palenzuela, co-founder of SALT; Damian Gregory, advocate and speaker; Denise Prehay, advocate and SALT Trainer; Tracy Seaton, advocate, Special Olympics athlete and assistant SALT Trainer; and Jairo Arana, advocate and SALT Trainer.
