NH Occupational Health Surveillance Program Releases Report on Barriers to Breastfeeding (NH UCEDD/LEND)

In New Hampshire 8 out of every 10 mothers initiates breastfeeding after birth, however only 3 mothers continue breastfeeding the full 12 months as suggested by the American Academy of Pediatrics. This and other findings are highlighted in a new report from the New Hampshire Occupational Health Surveillance Project (NH OHSP).

LTSS as it relates to Medical Expense Deduction

If Congress ends the Medical Expense Deduction, many Americans paying for Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS) costs will not be able to pay for both LTSS and federal income tax at the same time. Raising the standard deduction and lowering rates will not address the issue. Why? Because many chronically ill Americans will pay all of their income towards care, and without the Medical Expense Deduction they could still have a tax liability that they cannot afford to pay.

2016 Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps JD Program (MD UCEDD/LEND)

Brian Paxton, a rising third-year law student at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, was accepted into the 2016 Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps JD Program, to work 300 hours with Project HEAL (Health, Education, Advocacy, and Law) at Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, MD.

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD, LEND, IDDRC) UCEDD co-director Elise McMillan and TN Governor Bill Haslam were both honored with the 2017 Freedom Award from Disability Rights Tennessee (TN Protection and Advocacy). The Freedom Award honors Tennesseans who through their leadership have advanced the rights of people with disabilities.

National Survey Provides New Directions for Expanding Inclusion of People with Disabilities in the Workplace (NH UCEDD/LEND)

Kessler Foundation released the results of a new national survey that shows that employers are striving to recruit, hire, train, and retain people with disabilities, and reveals areas of opportunity for even greater successes in the workplace. The 2017 Kessler Foundation National Employment and Disability Survey: Supervisor Perspectives is the first survey to look at the effectiveness of these practices from the perspective of supervisors of employees with and without disabilities. Results of the 2017 Survey, which was commissioned by Kessler Foundation and conducted by the University of New Hampshire Institute on Disability (UNH-IOD), were presented by experts today on Capitol Hill.

PROSPER Act Letters - Higher Education Opportunity Act Reauthorization

AUCD issued a letter to the Chairwoman and Ranking Member of the House Education & Workforce Committee regarding the Promoting Real Opportunity, Success, and Prosperity through Education Reform (PROSPER) Act (H.R. 4508). The PROSPER Act would reauthorize the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 (HEOA) and the letter expresses AUCD's position on policy stances taken within the bill.
