AUCD Celebrates April as Autism Awareness Month

AUCD Celebrates April as Autism Awareness Month

On December 18, 2007, the UN General Assembly designated April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day, which was first observed in 2008. This UN resolution is one of only three official disease-specific United Nations Days that brings world attention to autism spectrum disorder, a developmental disorder that affects as many as 1 in 50 children, according to new estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). In this spirit, the entire month of April is recognized as National Autism Awareness Month. Read more...

Brenda Abbey from Tucson Medical Center and AZ LEND Alumni Trainee was chosen for her work in Bio Tech/Medicine/Health Care as one of Inside Tucson Business 2014 Up & Comers. The honor recognizes professionals early in their careers who have "demonstrated through their accomplishments, their leadership and/or their good deeds that they are likely to achieve positions of leadership or high standing in their organizations, industries or communities or who are likely to have a significant positive effect on their organizations, industries or communities during the remainder of their careers." Johnna Tanji (AZ LEND), 2014-2015 Judith Gravel Fellowship in Pediatric Audiology Recipient

The Judith Gravel Fellowship is awarded each year to an outstanding student in the fourth year of the Doctor of Audiology degree program. The recipient of the fellowship has the opportunity to gain valuable practical experience in dealing with hearing loss in babies and infants by working with specialists at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine and the UNC Hospital. Dr. Gravel was always passionate in stressing the importance of an interdisciplinary team approach and clinical experience in practicing pediatric audiology. Read more...

Circular Graphs Show Relationships Between Time Use and Transportation (MT UCEDD)Andrew Myers uses circular graphs or "Circos graphs" as a visual tool to highlight relationships derived from large amounts of data from the American Time Use Survey. Circos graphs were initially used in the natural sciences to represent genome sequences, however, their utility for visualizing large data is particularly helpful for representing relationships between time use and transportation use among Americans with mobility impairments. The classroom vibe is like any other: calm, quiet, a buzz in the air. Florescent lights illuminate the 35-person third-floor room in the Health and Learning Center. Hushed chatter between unfamiliar students works from one seat to the next as each casually files in, eyeing and locating a place to sit. It's all new.
