Congratulations to Sam Odom Recipient of the Arnold Lucius Gesell Prize

The Theodor Hellbrugge Foundation has awarded Samuel L. Odom the 2013 Arnold Lucius Gesell Prize for an outstanding career in the field of child development. The Award recognizes a child and adolescent psychiatrist and AACAP member who has made significant contributions in a lifetime career or single seminal work to the understanding or care of those with mental retardation and developmental disabilities. ICI project director Paula Sotnik wrote an article and is featured on a radio episode on the disability employment site Out of Step. Both the article and the episode discuss the disability-awareness training technique of having people without disabilities take on the disability experience (for example, through wearing a blindfold or using a wheelchair).

4 UCEDDs and LENDs Receive Grants from the Special Hope Foundation Catalytic Community Outreach Model: Comprehensive Health Care for Adults IDD GrantsThe Special Hope Foundation, in collaboration with AADMD, is pleased to announce that four universities within the UCEDD/LEND network were selected to each receive funding through the Special Hope Foundation's grant program. These grants will support the organizations within their projects that promote comprehensive health care for adults with developmental disabilities by raising awareness at the healthcare student level and by supporting their communities. ICI (ICI MA UCEDD/LEND) Awarded Grant on Higher Education for Students with Intellectual Disability and AutismThe Iowa Prevention of Disabilities Policy Council (Prevention Council) hosted a day-long, statewide disability policy summit near Des Moines. Entitled "Preventing Disabilities and Ensuring Access to Care," the Summit attracted nearly 130 government officials, consumers, family members, and private and public agency representatives. Participants worked together to identify priority needs in Iowa and offer consensus policy recommendations. Read more...

Project HEAL (MD UCEDD) Partners with RE/MAX Preferred

Project HEAL (Health, Education, Advocacy, and Law), a community-based program of the Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities at Kennedy Krieger Institute launched a new partnership with a RE/MAX Preferred in Baltimore. RE/MAX Preferred will make a monthly agency contribution to Project HEAL based on their number of closings. Read more...

Alaska LEND Family Advisory Council Parent Training SeriesThe Alaska LEND Family Advisory Council (LFAC) was formed May 2013 to provide guidance to LEND on all family components of the program. The group of 9 parents meet monthly to work on activities. One goal for this year is to offer a parent training series. The LFAC used a survey to identify a list of possible topics, and then picked the top 4 to offer for this year. Read more...

Student Employee Helps Meet Assistive Technology Needs (Rural Institute UCEDD MT)


Devon Geertsen, a junior in UM's Department of Management Information Systems, has a great job at the UM Rural Institute's MonTECH program; he helps students with disabilities find specialized software apps to help them be successful. These apps include note-taking software like Google Drive, class and assignment scheduling software like iStudiez, specialized electronic boods, and the Livescribe smartpen, which records lectures.
