Andy Imparato, AUCD Executive Director, Speaks at the Employer Practices RRTC: State of the Science ConferenceThe Employer Practices Rehabilitation Research Center (EP-RRTC) convened a "State of the Science" conference in Washington, D.C. to highlight new research findings in the area of disability and employment. The EP-RRTC is funded to Cornell University's Employment and Disability Institute by the U.S. Department of Education National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR).  Andy Imparato, Executive Director of the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD), spoke on the conference's closing panel to identify the necessary next steps within the disability research field, as a result of the EP-RRTC findings; noting that the workforce participation rate of people with disabilities has still not returned to pre-recession levels. Each year the American Public Health Association Disability Section honors those who have made significant contributions to the field of disability within the context of public health. The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to a person who, over the course of his or her career, has made a major contribution to the improvement of health and quality of life for people with disabilities through research, teaching, or advocacy. Past award winners have been nationally and/or internationally recognized as major contributors to the disability and public health fields. The Nisonger Center Dental Program - Johnstown Road Dental Clinic has received a "Center of Excellence" award from the DentaQuest Institute's Safety Net Solutions program. The John Rossetti Centers of Excellence awards recognize "safety net dental programs that have displayed tremendous leadership and excellence in oral health practice management and [that] have greatly improved the oral health status of their patients." Dr. Stephen Hooper Named Chair of Department of Allied Health Sciences (NC UCEDD/LEND)William L. Roper, MD, MPH, Dean of the UNC School of Medicine, has appointed Stephen R. Hooper, PhD, Chair of the Department of Allied Health Sciences (DAHS) and Associate Dean for Allied Health Sciences. Dr. Hooper is a Professor of Psychiatry, Psychology, Pediatrics, and Education at UNC and has carried a number of titles at the CIDD, including Director of Training and Education,Director of Child and Adolescent Neuropsychology, and Associate Director. Advice for the Governor (MT UCEDD)Dr. Meg Traci was recently appointed by Montana Governor Steve Bullock to the Montana Community First Choice (CFC) Development and Implementation Council. The Council advises the Department of Public Health and Human Services on the development of an integrated home and community-based service system for Montana. The Community First Choice Option will enable more Montanans with disability to stay at home rather than entering nursing homes.  Read more...

The Boggs Center, New Jersey's UCEDD, celebrated its 30th anniversary and namesake Elizabeth Boggs' 100th birthday year on Friday, September 27th, with an invitational colloquium focusing on "The Power of Listening in Building a Valued Future." The theme of listening to those for whom we work was woven throughout the event by featured speakers including state and university officials, AUCD colleagues, former students and trainees, self-advocates, and family members. Telehealth Brings Behavior Analysis Training to Iowa Families (IA UCEDD)

The Center for Leadership in Disability (CLD) in collaboration with the Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities (GCDD) and the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) is pleased to announce the recipients it's Inclusive Post-secondary Education Implementation Grants through their project the Georgia Inclusive Post-secondary Education Consortium. The University of Georgia's Fanning Institute and Columbus State University have been awarded $30,000 each to plan and launch inclusive post-secondary education programs for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Maine UCEDD Funded to Re-establish and Direct Maine Head Start State Collaboration Office

The goals and objectives of the Maine Head Start State Collaboration Office are to work towards the systemic alignment and integration of cross-system and cross-sector data, policy, procedure and professional development efforts, and to promote better linkages between Head Start/Early Head Start grantees and other child and family entities. The MHSSCO, Maine Department of Health and Human Services, Maine Head Start Directors Association, Maine Head Start Training and Technical Assistance Network, and the Maine Children's Growth Council will work with other key stakeholders to collaboratively achieve the goals and objectives in the five-year (2013-2018) MHSSCO work plan. In Tajikistan, where the average person earns $25 a month and spends $17 of it on bread, it's easy for the unique needs of the disabled to be overlooked by a struggling society. But Tajikistan-based advocates for this vulnerable population have found a new ally in Wayne State University's Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), which recently sent an advocacy expert to the capital city of Dushanbe to educate and encourage activists as part of an international partnership. Community of Practice Project (MO UCEDD, with NASDDDS, NACDD, and HSRI)The Administration on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AIDD) has funded the National Association of State Directors of Developmental Disabilities Services (NASDDDS) in partnership with UMKC Institute for Human Development (MO UCEDD), National Association of Councils for Developmental Disabilities (NACDD), and Human Resource Services Institute (HSRI) to host a five year Community of Practice. The purpose of the grant is to identify and implement policies and practices that will serve as a national framework for states to use to support families with members with I/DD across the lifespan. IOD at UNH (NH UCEDD) Awarded Grant to Improve National Disability DataThe Institute on Disability (IOD) at the University of New Hampshire has been awarded a 5 year, $4.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education's National Institute for Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR). This is another five year renewal of the grant, titled the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Disability Statistics and Demographics (StatsRRTC), which works towards improving knowledge about and access to existing disability data, and generating the knowledge needed to improve future disability data collection and dissemination. With the intention of building capacity and commitment to connecting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to meaningful jobs in Tennessee, the day-long Summit provided a venue through which to learn about national and local efforts, and to generate conversation about increasing employment outcomes. ICI (UCEDD MA) Staffers Attend Disability Meeting at United NationsThree staff members from UMass Boston's School for Global Inclusion and Social Development (SGI) and the Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI) were selected as delegates to the United Nations (UN) High-level Meeting on Disability and Development. Dean of the SGI William Kiernan was at the event, as well as Executive Leadership and Systems Manager of the ICI Lisa Blunt Rochester, and IREX Fellow Sagar Prasain. The meeting was convened to discuss how disability relates to the UN's Millennium Development Goals, and the importance of addressing disability rights within the UN's post-2015 development agenda. STEP UP Council (MS UCEDD) Sponsors Fun-Filled Game Day at The Rock


The Southern Miss football team has recently experienced a series of disappointing losses. However, on Sept. 25 when the STEP UP (Starting Today Empowering Peers through Uniting and Participating) to Leadership Council hosted the Arc's Rise and Shine adult program, winning ruled the day. The STEP UP to Leadership Council is composed of youth and young adults with and without disabilities. Council members serve as leaders within their schools, colleges/universities, and communities.
