2013 APHA Disability Section Scholarships

The Disability Section of the American Public Health Association (APHA) announces up to four $1000 Career Enhancement Scholarship opportunities for 2013.  These scholarships can be used by the awardees as desired, including to defray expenses for attendance at the Disability Section Scientific Program and Business meeting at the 2013 American Public Health Association Annual meeting in Boston, MA from November 2-6, 2013.

Who is eligible? All graduate students focusing their studies on disability and health at universities in the U.S., including students involved in the work of CDC's National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities programs and initiatives, State Disability and Health grantees, LEND, UCEDD and IDDRC students, AUCD Network Trainees, disability studies students, health professional students, etc.  Applicants must be enrolled during the fall 2013 semester and are eligible to receive the scholarship once.

What are the selection criteria? Applications will be assessed by a review panel based on the relevance of applicant's work/area of interest to the mission of the Disability Section, the strength of the application letter, the quality and completeness of materials submitted, and an estimate of potential for future leadership of the Disability Section.

How do I apply? All applicants are required to submit three documents in Word or pdf format:
a) a statement of interest, not exceeding two double-spaced pages;
b) a curriculum vitae or resume;
c) one letter of recommendation.
Each file must have the applicants' surname in the file name and be submitted to [email protected].   Applicants are responsible for ensuring that all materials are submitted  by September 2, 2013  at 5:00 PM CST. Winners will be notified via email by 9/16/13.  

What will be expected of me? Scholarship recipients are asked to submit a 300-word essay regarding their current work/training and how they plan to use their education and skills to eliminate disability-related health disparities in the future. These essays must be submitted by 12/1/13 along with a photo to [email protected].
