AUCD Network Members Receive Awards at AAIDD's 2012 Annual Meeting

Carolyn Hughes, PhD, of Vanderbilt University (TNaaidd award  UCEDD/LEND), received the 2012  Education Award at the 136th annual meeting of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD).

The AAIDD Education Award is given for significant contributions disseminating knowledge in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Elisabeth Dykens, PhD, of Vanderbilt University (TNaaidd award  UCEDD/LEND), received the 2012 Research  Award at the 136th annual meeting of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD).

The AAIDD Research Award is given for formulations and investigations that have contributed significantly to the body of scientific knowledge in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Megan Griffin, MEd, of University of New Mexico (NM UCEDD/LEaaidd award ND), received the 2012 Student Award at the 136th annual meeting of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD).

The AAIDD Student Award is given for service, leadership, and scholarship. Awardees must be nominated by at least two faculty members and submit documented evidence of service, leadership, and scholarship.

Bill Gaventa, MDiv, was honored with the Henri Nowen Leadership Bill Gaventa Award by the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) Religion and Spirituality Division. The award recognized "the ways you have helped people with disabilities teach all of us about faith, hope, and love."

Bill Gaventa serves as Director of Community and Congregational Supports and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at The Elizabeth M. Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities (NJ UCEDD) at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Rev. Gaventa leads projects in inclusive congregational supports, faith community leadership, cultural competence, aging/end of life issues, and supervises The Boggs Center's Clinical Pastoral Education program. His writings include journal articles, book chapters, monographs, and four edited books. Rev. Gaventa served as Editor of the Journal of Religion, Disability, and Health (1996-2010), edited the newsletter for the Religion & Spirituality Division of AAIDD, was a columnist for Insight (national newsletter of the Arc of the US), and worked as an adviser for Exceptional Parent Magazine's Spiritual and Religious Support Series.
