Dr. Carl F. Calkins, Director of the UMKC Institute for Human Development (MO UCEDD) and UMKC Professor of Psychology, was recently honored with the C. Brice Ratchford Memorial Fellowship Award presented by University of Missouri System President Timothy M. Wolfe at the 2012 University of Missouri President's Awards Dinner.

The Ratchford Fellowship recognizes a University of Missouri faculty member who demonstrates commitment, dedication, and effectiveness in advancing the land-grant mission of the university and is presented to a faculty member who personifies the creativity, vision, and leadership exhibited by the late Dr. C. Brice Ratchford, President Emeritus of the University of Missouri and Dean of Cooperative Extension.

Dr. Calkins established the UMKC Institute for Human Development over 30 years ago. Together, Dr. Calkins and IHD actively build partnerships that improve the lives of underserved people and the communities in which they live.

Throughout his career, Calkins has maintained a consistent belief that the role of the university is not to provide services directly but rather to partner with community organizations and state and national public agencies to enhance their capacity to implement evidenced-based practices and services.

One nominator noted that "his compassion and leadership have been a great combination to ensure that underserved audiences are served by the University of Missouri." Another said that "Calkins' dedication to urban outreach is perfectly consistent with Ratchford's philosophy. His ideas, energy, and commitment to urban extension deserve special recognition."
