Center for Child Health and Development (KS LEND) Provides Outreach Diagnostic Services to Military Families

For the past four years, specialist from the Center for Child Health and Development (CCHD), located at the University of Kansas Medical Center, has traveled to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas to provide outreach diagnostic services to military families. These outreach services expedite the diagnostic process for military families stationed at Fort Leavenworth for only 10-12 months. Outreach clinics were originally funded through grants by the Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs (CYSHCN) and later by the generous support of the Scottish Rite Masons from the Fort Leavenworth Masonic Lodge. The Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) within the Army has been a collaborative partner and plays a critical role in setting up recommended treatment services for children. LEND trainees from various disciplines (e.g., social work, psychology, speech, OT, audiology, nursing) that are funded through AUCD (a Maternal and Child Health training grant), have participated in outreach clinics, helping soldiers and their families to receive timely access to diagnostic services. A similar project is planned at Fort Riley in Kansas.
